LAS VEGAS — Zuffa Boxing was created to spotlight the next generation of stars, and on Friday night, Callum Walsh looked every bit the part. The unbeaten Irish contender delivered a composed, one-sided performance to defeat Carlos Ocampo by unanimous decision in the main event of Zuffa Boxing 1 at the UFC Apex, marking a successful launch for the promotion’s inaugural card.
Walsh (16-0, 11 KOs), a 24-year-old long backed by UFC and Zuffa Boxing president Dana White, dominated from the opening bell en route to scores of 98-90, 98-90 and 97-91 in the 10-round middleweight bout. According to CompuBox, Walsh outlanded Ocampo 123-88.
Class Gap Apparent Early
Walsh came out aggressively, clearly hunting a first-round knockout similar to the ones Errol Spence Jr. and Tim Tszyu previously scored against Ocampo. Several sharp left hands snapped Ocampo’s head back early, but the veteran Mexican proved durable.
Even without the early stoppage, Walsh continued to waltz through Ocampo in the second and third rounds, using blistering hand speed and clean power shots to pile up points. Ocampo absorbed heavy punishment in the middle rounds but refused to fold, forcing Walsh to box responsibly rather than recklessly chase the finish.
“I’m never happy with the performance unless I knock them out,” Walsh said. “But getting to 10 rounds again is good. The opponents are getting tougher and tougher.”
Brief Scare, Total Control
The lone blemish on Walsh’s night came in the sixth round, when a sloppy exchange led to a flash knockdown. Ocampo clipped Walsh with a jab and a shot to the back of the shoulder, and as their legs tangled, Walsh pitched forward and briefly touched the canvas.
The moment proved insignificant.
Walsh immediately reasserted control in rounds seven and eight. Reclaiming momentum and getting a point back on the scorecards when Ocampo was docked for a low blow. From there, the fight fizzled into a formality, with Walsh comfortably coasting over the final rounds while a bloodied Ocampo struggled to find answers.
A Promising Start at 160
Friday marked Walsh’s debut at middleweight and his first fight under new coach Marvin Somodio, following a September unanimous decision win over Fernando Vargas Jr..
“I feel a lot better and feel like I have improved since my last fight,” Walsh said. “I was really happy with my conditioning and wasn’t breathing heavily in between rounds. We worked very hard for this camp.”
For Ocampo (38-4, 26 KOs), the loss snapped a three-fight winning streak. The rugged veteran has now suffered defeats to Spence, Tszyu, Sebastian Fundora, and Walsh a résumé that underscores the caliber of opposition he’s faced.
The Future Zuffa Wants
Zuffa Boxing’s mission statement is clear: identify, promote, and build the sport’s next marquee names. Walsh’s disciplined, dominant performance was a textbook example of why the promotion has invested so heavily in him.
“The better the opponent, the better I’ll be,” Walsh said.
If Friday night was any indication, Zuffa Boxing may already have one of its cornerstone stars.
