Pete Carroll and John Spytek have had a busy first offseason as the new head coach and general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Since arriving in January, the new regime has tackled several major issues as they aim for a quick turnaround for the Raiders. Few, if any, moves have done more to make that goal a reality than when the Raiders traded for quarterback Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks. Acquiring Smith gives Carroll and Spytek a quarterback to build around in 2025, giving them some time to put together a long-term battle plan.
However, it sounds as though the plan is to keep Smith in Las Vegas beyond this season.
Carroll and Spytek provided updates on the Smith extension during the league’s annual meeting.
On Monday, both Carroll and Spytek were present at the annual owners’ meeting in West Palm Beach, Florida, and both gave the same response when asked on the topic of a Smith contract extension.
“We’re working on it,” Carroll said, per NFL.com and The Athletic’s Tashan Reed. “Yeah, we’re working on it. [Smith’s] excited to get going, get started. He’ll be here when we get rolling. But we are working on it.”

“We really look forward to having him not just this year, but for the years to come,” Spytek said, echoing the sentiments of the head coach.
The question with Smith, who has one year remaining on his current deal, would be how much the extension would cost the Raiders.
Shortly before the trade, it was reported that Smith’s side wanted $45 million per year, while Seattle was only willing to give him $35 million.
The @Seahawks and Geno Smith were far apart in negotiations—with Seattle closer to around $35 million per and Smith’s camp around $45 million per. That precipitated the trade to the @Raiders.

Now with the Raiders, there appears to be little to no concern about a deal getting done. There are no rumors of any hostility, and Carroll expects Smith to be present when the Raiders begin their offseason workout program next week. It is likely the subject of an extension will be talked about more in detail then, with the possibility of a deal being done.
Carroll and Spytek clearly value Smith highly, and they hope for him to be a fixture of the Raiders for years to come.
