Michel Pereira is the latest UFC fighter to publicly criticize veteran referee Herb Dean. Following his unanimous decision loss to Shara Magomedov at UFC Fight Night 280 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Pereira expressed frustration over Dean’s handling of multiple fouls during the bout, arguing that repeated infractions went unpunished and may have impacted the outcome.
Pereira dropped Magomedov in the opening round and appeared to seize early momentum before the Dagestani rallied to win the final two rounds on all three judges’ scorecards. While the 29-28 unanimous decision itself generated little controversy, the officiating quickly became a major talking point.
Throughout the fight, Pereira was subjected to several fouls, including a low blow, an eye poke, and repeated grabs of his hair while in vulnerable positions. Although Dean issued multiple warnings, he never deducted a point. After the fight, Pereira voiced his displeasure in a statement posted to Instagram.
“In MMA, there are rules,” Pereira wrote. “They must be applied with the same level of rigor to everyone.”
“Respecting the rules means protecting the integrity of the sport and ensuring justice inside the octagon.”
“My opponent was warned several times and was not punished. When a rule is ignored, the result is compromised. Where’s the criterion, Herb Dean?”
Another Week, Another Herb Dean Controversy
Pereira’s criticism comes amid growing scrutiny surrounding one of MMA’s most respected officials. Just one week earlier, veteran featherweight Andre Fili protested immediately after his TKO loss to Vinicius Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 279. Claiming Oliveira landed multiple illegal strikes to the back of his head during the finishing sequence.
Before that, former two-division UFC champion Alex Pereira publicly accused Dean of mishandling the ending of his interim heavyweight title fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250.

Still Considered MMA’s Gold Standard
Despite the recent wave of criticism, Herb Dean remains one of the most decorated referees in mixed martial arts history. A former professional fighter, Dean has officiated championship bouts across multiple major organizations for more than two decades. While earning numerous Referee of the Year honors at the World MMA Awards.
His calm demeanor and experience have long made him one of the sport’s most trusted officials. Still, with multiple high-profile fighters questioning his recent performances in consecutive events, Dean has unexpectedly found himself at the center of one of the biggest officiating debates in MMA.
Whether the UFC or athletic commissions respond remains to be seen, but the spotlight on one of the sport’s most recognizable referees continues to intensify.
