The New York Liberty secured their second WNBA Commissioner’s Cup title on Tuesday, with City Mayor Zohran Mamdani joining the team in celebration.
New York City claimed another basketball title in June as the Liberty defeated the Las Vegas Aces 93-85 in the Commissioner’s Cup championship at Barclays Center. This follows the New York Knicks’ recent NBA title win, their first since 1973.
Mayor Mamdani expressed enthusiasm for the Liberty’s championship win, sharing the team’s post and joining the celebrations.
Breanna Stewart led New York with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds, adding four assists, two blocks, and two steals. Representing New York on the court, Sabrina Ionescu contributed 26 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Pauline Astier added 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
With this victory, New York became the first team in league history to win multiple Commissioner’s Cup titles. The city of New York adds yet another milestone to its sports legacy.
New York first won the in-season tournament in 2023, also defeating the Aces in the final. Jonquel Jones earned MVP honors in that game, making it a memorable moment for New York fans.
Stewart and the team aim to maintain their momentum and pursue the WNBA title this season, seeking to replicate their success from two years ago, a goal shared by New York basketball supporters citywide.
Last season, the Liberty were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Phoenix Mercury, losing the series 2-1. This year, though, New York hopes for a different outcome.
They are currently ranked second in the Eastern Conference with a 12-7 record, keeping New York fans optimistic for what’s ahead.
