Oleksandr Usyk may have already identified the opponent for the final chapter of his legendary boxing career. Just one day after announcing he was vacating the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight world titles while retaining The Ring championship. Longtime promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that Usyk appears to be targeting former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder for his farewell bout.
If the fight comes together. It would likely take place in the United States as Usyk closes the curtain on one of boxing’s most decorated careers. Speaking during a press conference Saturday, Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn offered insight into what he believes is Usyk’s plan following his decision to relinquish three of the four major heavyweight titles.
“He’s earned the right to do whatever he wants,” Hearn said. “So, he’s going to fight Wilder next, I believe.” Hearn added that Usyk is expected to seek the most lucrative offer available before bringing his career to a close.
“He’ll just go to all bidders and say, ‘Where’s the most amount of money I can get for that fight?’ And that will be him done.”
Stepping Away From Mandatory Obligations
Hearn suggested Usyk’s decision to vacate his belts was driven by more than simply making room for the next generation of heavyweight contenders. Rather than dealing with mandatory challengers. Purse bids and strict sanctioning body deadlines, Usyk now has complete control over his final fight.
“I think maybe he’s realizing, does he want to be put under pressure of an ordered fight, a 28-day negotiation, a purse bid, and then taking part in the fight in the next 90 days?” Hearn said.
He also questioned whether Usyk had any interest in facing mandatory contender Agit Kabayel under those circumstances. A matchup between Usyk and Wilder has been discussed previously. The two sides entered negotiations late last year, but an agreement never materialized.
Instead, Wilder (45-4-1, 43 KOs) returned to the ring in April. Defeating Derek Chisora by decision in a bout between two former heavyweight titleholders. Although “The Bronze Bomber” remains one of boxing’s most dangerous punchers. He has gone just 3-4 since losing the WBC heavyweight championship in 2020.
One Final Chapter
Usyk (25-0, 16 KOs) remains undefeated and is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of his generation. The Ukrainian recently announced he would keep The Ring heavyweight championship while relinquishing the WBA, WBC and IBF titles. Allowing those organizations to crown new champions while he focuses on what he has repeatedly called his “last dance.”
The undefeated champion is coming off an 11th-round stoppage victory over former kickboxing superstar Rico Verhoeven. A performance that proved more competitive than many expected. Now approaching his 40th birthday in January, Usyk appears determined to finish his Hall of Fame career on his own terms.
If Hearn’s prediction proves accurate. Boxing fans could finally witness the long-discussed showdown between Usyk’s technical brilliance and Wilder’s devastating knockout power before one of the sport’s all-time greats rides off into retirement.
