One aspect of the Las Vegas Raiders that has received plenty of attention throughout the offseason has been the need to bolster the wide receiver corps.
The Raiders made a splash this offseason trading for quarterback Geno Smith, but now they have to build the infrastructure around him to ensure his stint in Las Vegas is successful. They have been linked to free agent receivers before, and there are some options in the NFL Draft that can appeal to them. Throughout the next month, information will come out to give hints to what the Raiders are planning.
While they have time for some options, one of the more impactful players will know their fate soon enough.
The Raiders have to make a decision soon on whether or not to trade for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
On Tuesday, Aiyuk is due for a $22.85 million bonus if he remains on the 49ers’ roster. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, once that bonus is paid, Aiyuk will be locked in as a member of the 49ers for the 2025 season, effectively ending any and all trade talk.
49ers owe WR Brandon Aiyuk a $22.85 million bonus if he’s on their roster Tuesday, April 1. Once the 49ers pay that bonus, any trade talks for Aiyuk would be off, and he would be expected to spend the 2025 season in San Francisco. Aiyuk offers some form of risk coming off of a torn ACL and MCL that ended his 2024 season after seven games, but he represents a part of the passing game that the Raiders sorely lack.
For the Raiders, Aiyuk would be an excellent complement to Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers. He offers excellent route running chops, and his ability to attack deeper down the field would open things up for the Raiders considerably. With 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in his last healthy season in 2023, Aiyuk has an excellent track record to lean on.
While it appears Aiyuk is destined to remain a 49er, the Raiders have some time remaining if they decide to go bold.
