Raiders Loose Veteran Wide Receiver

© Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

In a surprising move, newly signed Las Vegas Raiders Wide Receiver Michael Gallup has announced his retirement from the NFL after 6 seasons. Gallup was in contention of the 3rd wide receiver spot and was looking to regain his form before the injuries. He finishes his career with 266 passes caught for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns with the Dallas Cowboys.

His best season came in 2019, when he caught 66 passes for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. Gallup tore his ACL in his left knee late in the 2021 season, but despite that the Cowboys signed him to a five-year, $57.5 million deal in 2022. Unfortunately he was unable to return to his level of play that saw him average 15.5 yards per catch.

Gallup’s last game was a playoff lost to the Green Bay Packers where he caught six passes for 103 yards. The Cowboys released Gallup on March 15 to open $9.5 million in salary cap space. Looking for a fresh start, the veteran receiver was poised to take the 3rd spot. He was poised to show that he could still contribute at a high level still.

Sudden move

Going through OTA’s he was trying to get comfortable with a new system and was very hopeful that he was able to establish himself with his new team. But that will not happen as he will not play a snap for the Silver and Black. This news has caught the Raiders off guard but this will give someone else an opportunity to step up and take the 3rd wide receiver spot.
