UFC Fight Night in Atlantic City had everything a UFC fan would ever want. Knockouts (eight of them!), good fights, and drama. It’s enough to leave a mark on the MMA landscape, with fans wanting more.
So what should the UFC universe make of Saturday’s event? What was absolutely awesome about this card? What matters could be better moving forward? Let’s go all-in on this event and see what was great and what went bankrupt.
What Ruled About UFC Fight Night
For one, the aforementioned eight knockouts whet the appetite of the strike-savvy UFC fans. It gave fans what they wanted, seeing some unfortunate souls getting KO’ed by efficient striking.
From Joquain Buckley’s KO to Kyle Nelson’s first-round finish, UFC Fight Night gave the striker fans exactly what they wanted.
There was also the main event that went the distance to end the night. In the women’s flyweight division, Erin Blanchfield and Manon Fiorot fought each other in an incredible bout. The match was rough-and-tumble for both sides, coming down to a decision. Of course, Fiorot won the match. But it still gave the fans their money’s worth with a combination of grappling and striking.
What Didn’t Rule About UFC Fight Night
Obviously, the controversy surrounding Chris Weidman and Bruno Silva was a sore spot. Poking the eye out of the opponent and winning anyways is a bad look. It’s easy to feel bad for Bruno Silva after he was screwed in the match.
This is the main blemish on the card because it raises concerns of favoritism. While Weidman has been in the UFC since 2011, that doesn’t mean he gets the benefit of the doubt after poking Silva’s eyes more than once.
Overall Rating
What was an otherwise good card is overshadowed by the controversial finish in Weidman-Silva. Yes, UFC Fight Night in Atlantic City gave MMA fans plenty to cheer for with a good main event and knockouts. But the drama in one of the matches is too much to ignore.
Therefore, this card gets a 3.75 out of 5. While the highlights bring this card up to a respectable rating, the Weidman-Silva controversy is too much to ignore.
