One of the most unusual storylines of fight week unfolded Friday as New York State boxing officials ordered Jaron “Boots” Ennis to trim his beard before stepping into the ring against unified junior middleweight champion Xander Zayas.
The decision came after Team Zayas formally raised concerns about the length of Ennis’ facial hair, arguing it could provide additional protection to his chin during Saturday night’s championship clash at Barclays Center.
Jaron Ennis looked comfortable on the scales, weighing in at 153 pounds one pound under the 154-pound super welterweight championship limit. The former unified welterweight champion appeared physically strong in his move up from 147 pounds, showing no signs of difficulty making weight for the biggest fight of his junior middleweight career.
However, it wasn’t Ennis’ weight that became the talking point Friday morning.
Team Zayas Files Beard Complaint
According to DAZN’s Chris Mannix, Team Xander Zayas requested that Ennis shorten his beard before the fight. Ennis initially declined the request, but the New York State Athletic Commission ultimately intervened.
“There was some drama this morning around the length of the beard that Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis fights with,” Mannix reported during DAZN’s weigh-in coverage.
“There was a request from Xander Zayas’ team that ‘Boots’ trim his beard going into this fight on Saturday night. ‘Boots’ politely declined that request, but the New York Commission has come in and said that he does need to trim his beard down a little bit.”
The commission reportedly instructed Ennis to trim his beard so that it more closely follows his jawline before fight night.
Why the Beard Became an Issue
Although no clause regarding facial hair existed in the fighters’ contracts, Team Zayas argued that Ennis’ full beard could help absorb punches. The belief isn’t entirely without scientific discussion. An April 2020 study published by Oxford Academic examined whether thick facial hair could reduce impact force by testing inanimate skin-like materials with and without hair.
The research concluded that the bearded surface experienced approximately 16 percent greater peak force while absorbing roughly 37 percent more total impact energy. While the study has fueled debate within combat sports circles, there is no consensus that a beard provides a meaningful competitive advantage inside the ring.
Ennis has competed throughout his professional career with a full beard and has never previously been instructed to trim it before a bout. Likewise, no previous opponent had publicly objected to his facial hair.
Although Ennis had not yet trimmed his beard during Friday’s final faceoff, he is expected to comply with the commission’s ruling before entering the ring Saturday night.
Championship Stakes Remain the Main Event
Despite the unexpected controversy, the focus quickly shifts back to one of the biggest fights of the year. Ennis enters the bout looking to become a two-division world champion by taking Zayas’ unified WBA and WBO super welterweight titles.
Zayas, meanwhile, hopes to defend his belts and continue proving he belongs among boxing’s elite while extending his undefeated record. Whether the trimmed beard makes any difference remains to be seen, but it has certainly added another unique chapter to an already fascinating championship showdown.
