SEATTLE — Even without their biggest star, the United States Men’s National Team continues to make a powerful statement on soccer’s biggest stage.

Playing without injured captain Christian Pulisic, the Americans defeated Australia 2-0 Friday at Lumen Field to secure advancement to the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup with one group-stage match still remaining.

The victory marks a historic milestone for the United States, which has now won back-to-back World Cup matches for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1930.

Led by manager Mauricio Pochettino, the Americans improved their position atop Group D and now need only a draw against Türkiye on Thursday to officially claim first place in the group and earn a favorable Round of 32 matchup in Santa Clara, California.

Pulisic’s Absence Doesn’t Slow Americans

Much of the pre-match discussion centered around Pulisic’s availability after the U.S. star suffered a calf injury during the team’s opening victory over Paraguay. The team’s leading playmaker was unavailable against Australia, but the Americans showed they are far more than a one-man squad.

“He’s an important player for us, Christian, but it was impossible today for him to play,” Pochettino told Fox Sports after the match. “We hope that next game he will be available, but if we want to win the competition we need the whole team.”

Pochettino emphasized that winning a World Cup requires contributions from the entire roster, though he acknowledged Pulisic remains one of the team’s most important players.

Early Pressure Produces Another Breakthrough

The United States followed a similar script to its dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay. An aggressive start and relentless attacking pressure forced Australia into an early mistake.

In the 11th minute, defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently redirected a dangerous cross into his own net after a threatening run down the flank by striker Folarin Balogun. The own goal ignited the crowd and gave the Americans an early advantage they never relinquished. Later in the first half, rising U.S. defender Alex Freeman delivered one of the tournament’s breakout moments.

After a long-range effort from Sergiño Dest ricocheted high into the air inside the penalty area, Freeman reacted quickly and headed the ball home. Following a lengthy VAR review, the goal was confirmed, sending the Seattle crowd into celebration.

The score marked Freeman’s first World Cup goal and further highlighted the young talent emerging throughout the U.S. roster.

Seattle Delivers Electric Atmosphere

The atmosphere inside Lumen Field matched the significance of the occasion. A crowd of 66,925 packed the stadium, creating one of the most energetic environments of the tournament thus far.

Fans filled downtown Seattle hours before kickoff, with “U-S-A” chants echoing throughout the city as anticipation built for the match. Once play began, the supporters fueled an American side that controlled possession, dictated tempo, and limited Australia’s opportunities throughout the contest.

“It was a fantastic game again, very good first half,” Pochettino said. “I think we dominated the game against a very tough team.”

With six points from two matches, the United States has already secured passage to the knockout rounds. Now the focus shifts to Thursday’s showdown against Türkiye, where first place in Group D remains within reach. A draw would guarantee the Americans finish atop the group and potentially avoid a more difficult path through the knockout bracket.
