Weather and Bugs Threaten UFC Freedom 250, But Dana White Says Event Will Go On

As the UFC prepares for one of the most ambitious events in its history, organizers are facing challenges that have nothing to do with the fighters inside the Octagon. UFC Freedom 250, scheduled for Sunday on the South Lawn of the White House, could be impacted by thunderstorms, lightning, and even swarms of insects. Despite those concerns, UFC President Dana White insists the show will go on.

The historic event, being held in conjunction with America’s 250th anniversary celebration, has attracted worldwide attention. Now, Mother Nature may have a say in how smoothly the day unfolds.

Speaking ahead of the event, White acknowledged that weather conditions remain a significant concern for organizers. “The three big problems, as far as I am seeing right now, are rain, lightning and a ton of bugs,” White told The Hollywood Reporter.

While the UFC has spent months preparing the massive temporary venue on White House grounds, controlling the weather remains impossible. The organization has contingency plans in place, but several factors remain outside its control.

Thunderstorms in the Forecast

According to weather forecasts, Washington, D.C., could experience heavy thunderstorms Sunday afternoon. Meteorologists have warned that downpours and lightning may impact portions of the event.

Fortunately for the fighters, the specially constructed venue includes a roof covering the Octagon itself, protecting competitors and officials from direct exposure to rain. However, thousands of spectators seated around the venue will not enjoy the same protection. Fans attending the event could find themselves dealing with wet conditions if storms arrive as predicted.

Lightning Could Cause Delays

The biggest weather-related concern may be lightning. Should lightning strikes occur in the immediate area, organizers could be forced to temporarily halt the event until conditions improve.

White made it clear that even if delays become necessary, cancellation is not being considered. “We’re going to be good on Sunday,” White said. “I don’t care if it snows, rains, we’re going. Even lightning. Whenever there was lightning, you’d sit the lightning out. When it was over, you played. That’s what we’ll do.”

The UFC appears prepared to pause competition if necessary and resume action once safety conditions are restored.

Insects Could Become Unexpected Guests

Weather isn’t the only concern. Experts have also warned that the combination of warm temperatures, humidity, and powerful lighting systems could attract large numbers of insects.

University of Maryland entomologist Michael Raupp told Axios that the event could unintentionally become a magnet for flying bugs. “This event is going to draw a big crowd,” Raupp said. “But guess what? There are going to be even more bugs joining.”

The bright lights surrounding the outdoor venue could attract swarms of insects throughout the evening.

According to Raupp, the insects may create another unexpected challenge. Bats. “If you have this banquet of small flying insects,” Raupp explained, “the bats are going to say, ‘Oh, baby!’”

While the prospect may sound humorous, organizers will likely be monitoring any unusual activity around the venue as darkness falls. White has already experienced some of the bug issues firsthand.

He recently referenced a White House dinner where guests reportedly dealt with clusters of gnats throughout the evening.

Historic Event Still Moving Forward

Despite the potential obstacles, UFC Freedom 250 remains one of the most anticipated combat sports events of the year.

The card features a lightweight title unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, along with former two-division champion Alex Pereira attempting to become a three-division titleholder against Ciryl Gane in the interim heavyweight championship fight.

The event is expected to draw a massive audience both on-site and worldwide through Paramount+.
