Las Vegas has approved a multi-million-dollar plan to continue hosting the NBA Summer League through 2028. This decision reinforces its position as a leading sports and events destination. Local tourism officials have committed over $4 million to retain the tournament.

This funding supports a broader initiative to boost tourism and enhance Las Vegas’s convention and entertainment offerings. Support for the Summer League, a signature NBA event, will increase annually. It will start at just over $1 million and reach $1.5 million by the end of the agreement.

Over the past two decades, the Summer League has grown from a small off-season event into a major basketball showcase in Las Vegas. The nearly two-week tournament features games between all teams from the NBA. It allows franchises to assess new and emerging talent. Furthermore, it also attracts significant media coverage through national broadcasts and digital streaming.

Tourism projections emphasize the event’s economic impact. This year’s Summer League is expected to attract tens of thousands of out-of-region visitors and generate over 100,000 hotel stays, underscoring the importance of sports tourism to Las Vegas, especially in the summer. Notably, the NBA’s ongoing involvement solidifies the city’s reputation in the industry.

The tournament officials consider the tournament more than a seasonal event. Historically, it played a crucial role in reshaping Las Vegas’s reputation within professional sports. Its ongoing presence, even when major leagues hesitated to partner with a city known for gambling, helped build trust. This development paved the way for future NBA partnerships.

The tournament is preparing for further expansion in the next few years. This evolution will be anchored in the continued relationship with the Association of National Basketball. In addition to the basketball investment, the tourism authority also approved funding for other projects. These include support for a major industry conference and the continued operation of a transportation system serving the convention center. Together, these efforts are part of a long-term plan to keep Las Vegas at the forefront of entertainment and business events.

The city is doubling down on sports as a powerful driver of tourism and global attention for years to come by extending its commitment to the Summer League, a direct result of the ongoing popularity of the NBA.
