Ronda Rousey’s comeback victory over Gina Carano may have reignited excitement among MMA fans, but UFC veteran Matt Brown believes her latest comments about Holly Holm prove she hasn’t changed at all.
Following her 17-second submission victory over Carano at the inaugural MVP MMA event, Rousey announced her retirement and made it clear she has no plans to fight again. However, when discussing former UFC champion Holly Holm, Rousey claimed she would “clean her clock” in a rematch despite insisting the fight would never happen.
Those comments didn’t sit well with Brown. Speaking on The Fighter vs. The Writer podcast, the longtime UFC welterweight didn’t hold back when discussing Rousey’s remarks.
Brown Calls Rousey’s Comments “Uninteresting”
While Brown acknowledged that confidence is an essential trait for elite fighters, he questioned why anyone would take Rousey’s claims seriously based on a comeback win over Carano.
“It’s so uninteresting,” Brown said. “She’s so just in her own world. It’s cool she believes in herself, I guess. The world is in her hands with that kind of belief. She’d get f***ed up by Holly if they fought again.”
Brown argued that Rousey’s self-belief is admirable but doesn’t necessarily align with reality. “No one’s convinced because you beat Gina Carano,” Brown added. “Who do you think you’re fooling here?”
Longstanding Criticism Returns
Brown’s criticism extends beyond Rousey’s latest interview. Since Rousey’s departure from the UFC following consecutive knockout losses to Holm and Amanda Nunes, Brown has repeatedly suggested that one of the biggest reasons fans turned against her was her unwillingness to fully acknowledge those defeats.
Instead, Rousey has often discussed the role that neurological issues, head trauma, and concussion-like symptoms played in the final chapter of her fighting career.
Brown believes that approach has prevented her from fully connecting with fans. “She’s literally the one person who doesn’t get it,” Brown said. According to Brown, Rousey’s biggest obstacle has never been her fighting ability.
It’s her public image. The UFC Hall of Famer became one of the biggest stars in combat sports history and helped transform women’s MMA into a mainstream attraction. Yet Brown believes her personality and public comments have consistently undermined her popularity.
“She’s her own worst enemy,” Brown said. Brown even contrasted Rousey’s personality with Holm’s, praising the former champion for her humility and professionalism throughout her career. “Holly Holm’s such a humble sweetheart and a good person all around,” Brown said.
Brown’s Advice: Stay Quiet
Brown believes Rousey would be far better served by avoiding conversations about past opponents altogether. With no rematch against Holm on the horizon and Rousey once again retired, Brown sees little value in revisiting a loss that happened more than a decade ago.
“She’s insufferable,” Brown said. “I’m going to be her PR person for the next five seconds, and it’s really simple. This is your PR, Ronda: Shut the hell up.”
Brown argued that Rousey’s public perception would likely improve if she simply stopped discussing old rivalries and hypothetical outcomes.
