Former UFC lightweight title challenger Dustin Poirier was arrested Sunday night in Georgia on a charge of public drunkenness. According to online court records. Poirier, 37, was booked by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 10:14 p.m. local time. Additional details surrounding the incident have not yet been released by law enforcement officials.

Following reports of his arrest, Poirier addressed the situation briefly through social media. “Love you all,” Poirier wrote on Instagram. “I’m working on myself.”

At this time, authorities have not released an official statement regarding the circumstances that led to Poirier’s arrest. According to reports, former UFC fighter and wrestling standout Ben Askren shared information indicating the incident stemmed from Poirier allegedly drinking excessively at an airport.

Askren also circulated video showing Poirier engaging in lighthearted wrestling with another individual at a bar prior to the arrest. No additional charges have been reported.

A Career Built on Respect

The arrest comes as a surprise to many in the mixed martial arts community. Where Poirier has long been regarded as one of the sport’s most respected figures. Throughout his UFC career, Poirier earned widespread admiration not only for his accomplishments inside the Octagon but also for his charitable work outside of it.

Through The Good Fight Foundation, Poirier and his wife Jolie have raised millions of dollars for numerous causes, helping families, schools, and communities in need. Prior to Sunday’s incident, Poirier had no known criminal history or public legal troubles.

Looking Ahead

While the incident marks an unfortunate chapter for one of MMA’s most respected figures, Poirier’s statement suggests he recognizes the seriousness of the situation and is focused on addressing it.

As additional details emerge from authorities, the MMA community will undoubtedly be hoping that this represents a temporary setback rather than a larger issue for the retired UFC star. For now, one of the sport’s most beloved athletes faces an unexpected challenge outside of competition as he works through the aftermath of Sunday’s arrest.
