Jimmy Fallon Faces Backlash for Hosting Conor McGregor on ‘The Tonight Show’

Conor McGregor’s return to the spotlight ahead of UFC 329 has reignited controversy far beyond the Octagon. The former two-division UFC champion appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week as part of a media tour promoting his July 11 comeback fight against Max Holloway. While the interview itself was lighthearted and focused primarily on McGregor’s return to competition, many viewers were outraged by the decision to give the Irish superstar a national platform.

The backlash stems from a civil case in Ireland in which a jury found McGregor liable for assaulting Nikita Hand in November 2024. The case originated from allegations dating back to 2018. McGregor later lost an appeal seeking to overturn the verdict in 2025.

As McGregor ramps up promotion for his highly anticipated UFC comeback, his public appearances continue to draw scrutiny from critics who believe the legal proceedings should remain part of the conversation whenever he is featured on major media platforms.

Social Media Reacts Swiftly

Following his appearance with Fallon, social media users flooded the show’s YouTube page with criticism aimed at both McGregor and the late-night host.

One viewer wrote, “Pretty nuts that Conor is able to book these kind of interviews considering everything that’s happened.”

Another commenter questioned why a figure involved in such a highly publicized legal case was being featured on a major television platform less than two years after the verdict.

The reaction quickly spread across social media platforms. With many viewers expressing disappointment that the controversy was not addressed during the interview.

Critics Target Jimmy Fallon

Several critics specifically targeted Fallon. Accusing him of treating McGregor like any other celebrity guest without acknowledging the legal issues surrounding him.

Others pointed to what they viewed as a contradiction between Fallon’s public image and his decision to host McGregor. Some commenters argued that public figures should face greater scrutiny before being given opportunities to rehabilitate their image on mainstream television.

The criticism reflects a broader debate about the responsibilities of media outlets and entertainment programs when booking controversial guests.

Irish Fans Voice Their Frustration

The criticism wasn’t limited to American audiences. Many commenters identifying themselves as Irish argued that McGregor’s standing in Ireland has changed dramatically since the civil case. Several suggested that the former UFC champion no longer enjoys the overwhelming support he once received during his rise to becoming one of the biggest stars in combat sports.

“The guy is basically shunned here in Ireland, yet he’s getting booked for Jimmy Fallon?” one commenter wrote.

Others expressed frustration that American audiences may not fully understand the extent of the controversy surrounding McGregor back home.

UFC 329 Remains the Focus

Despite the backlash, McGregor remains one of the most recognizable names in sports. The 37-year-old is scheduled to return to action at UFC 329 against former featherweight champion Max Holloway at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It will be McGregor’s first fight in five years and one of the most anticipated UFC events of the year.

His ability to generate headlines remains unmatched. Whether those headlines stem from his fighting career, business ventures, legal issues, or public appearances.
