LAS VEGAS — Juan Diaz announced himself as a bantamweight prospect to watch Saturday night. The UFC newcomer spoiled another comeback attempt for Malcolm Wellmaker by securing a second-round rear-naked choke victory at UFC Fight Night 276 inside the Meta APEX in Las Vegas.

Diaz officially finished the fight at 4:08 of Round 2. After weathering portions of the striking exchanges early, Diaz showcased a more complete skill set than many expected.

Once the fight hit the mat in the second round, Diaz locked in the rear-naked choke and forced the stoppage to cap off an impressive UFC debut. “I’m a complete fighter,” Diaz said through an interpreter afterward. “I can wrestle, I’m not just a striker.”

Another Setback for Wellmaker

For Malcolm Wellmaker, the loss represents another frustrating setback after an explosive start to his UFC career. Wellmaker had generated early momentum inside the octagon before suffering an upset loss to Ethyn Ewing last November.

Saturday’s defeat drops him to 2-2 in the UFC and raises new questions about his consistency moving forward in the bantamweight division.

Brandon Moreno in Diaz’s Corner

One notable detail from the fight was the presence of former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno in Diaz’s corner. Moreno’s involvement immediately drew additional attention to Diaz as a developing talent. Based on Saturday’s performance, Diaz may quickly become one of the division’s more intriguing young names.

Diaz improved to 16-1-1 professionally with the victory and showed composure well beyond what many expect from a promotional debut. His confidence afterward reflected that. “I trained so hard,” Diaz said. “I’m very dangerous.”

The bantamweight division remains one of the UFC’s deepest weight classes, making breakout performances especially difficult to achieve. But Diaz’s ability to finish an established UFC opponent in his debut immediately puts him on the radar. Meanwhile, Wellmaker now faces another rebuilding phase after suffering consecutive high-profile setback.

Juan Diaz arrived in the UFC with a statement win. After submitting Malcolm Wellmaker in his debut, the bantamweight division suddenly has another prospect worth watching closely.
