Jaime Munguia Rejects IBF World Title Offer Osleys Iglesias’ Search Continues

The waiting game drags on for Osleys Iglesias. After Canelo Alvarez withdrew from consideration last week, the IBF’s next available option Jaime Munguia followed suit on Monday, declining an offer to fight for the vacant world title.

That decision leaves the International Boxing Federation still searching for a willing challenger to face Iglesias, The Ring’s No. 1-rated super middleweight contender.

Iglesias (14-0, 13 KOs), 28, has been in holding pattern mode since September 4, when he powered past Vladimir Shishkin with an eighth-round stoppage in a world title eliminator. That victory positioned the Cuban puncher as the mandatory contender for the IBF belt.

The title became vacant after Terence Crawford announced his retirement last month, theoretically clearing the runway for Iglesias’ first world title shot. In reality, the process has been anything but straightforward.

According to Eye of The Tiger president Camille Estephan, Iglesias’ team wasted no time accepting the IBF’s proposal.

“We accepted the fight within five minutes of receiving the email,” Estephan confirmed.

Munguia’s representatives at Zanfer Promotions, however, declined the bout several hours later, forcing the sanctioning body back to square one.

IBF Runs Out of Easy Options

With Munguia out, the IBF must now continue down its rankings and the landscape is increasingly complicated.

  • Callum Simpson, rated No. 5, is unavailable after suffering a shock 10th-round stoppage loss to Troy Williamson on Dec. 20, just two weeks after the most recent ratings update.

  • Hamzah Sheeraz (No. 6) has been ordered to face Diego Pacheco for WBO world honors and could also be angling for a WBC route instead.

  • Russia’s Pavel Silyagin (No. 7) is coming off a career-best July win over Pablo Exequiel Corzo.

  • Former titleholder William Scull and Munguia’s former opponent Bruno Surace also sit within the top 10.

Each option brings its own promotional, contractual, or strategic hurdles none of which have been resolved yet.

A Title Without a Dance Partner

For Iglesias, the frustration is understandable. He has done everything required inside the ring: dominate his opposition, win the eliminator, and accept the title opportunity without hesitation.

What he doesn’t have at least for now  is an opponent willing to meet him.

As the IBF continues to work its way down the rankings, the super middleweight division finds itself in an unusual holding pattern: a vacant world title, a mandatory contender ready to fight, and a shrinking list of challengers willing to step forward.

Until that changes, Osleys Iglesias remains exactly where he’s been for months world-class, unbeaten, and waiting.
