Stephen Fulton’s bid to become a three-division world champion hit a major snag at Friday’s weigh-in in San Antonio. The former unified 122-pound champion came in two pounds over the 130-pound limit. Rendering him ineligible to win the WBC super featherweight title in Saturday night’s showdown with defending champion O’Shaquie Foster.
The bout will still move forward at the Frost Bank Center, but only Foster can retain or lose the title. If Foster is defeated, the WBC belt will become vacant, adding a dramatic wrinkle to an already high-stakes matchup.
Fulton’s Weight Struggles Continue
Stephen Fulton (23-1, 8 KOs), who currently holds the WBC featherweight title, has openly acknowledged that making 126 pounds has become increasingly difficult. But his move up to super featherweight didn’t go as planned, even with the additional four pounds to work with.
The 31-year-old Philadelphian was aiming to join boxing’s elite multi-division champions by winning a third belt across three weight classes. Instead, he’ll enter the ring Saturday fighting only for pride and perhaps positioning within the super featherweight landscape.
Fulton has rebuilt momentum since his lone loss to Naoya Inoue, regaining the WBC featherweight belt in February by defeating Brandon Figueroa in their rematch at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Foster fight was meant to symbolize a fresh chapter up the scale, but Friday’s miss complicates that narrative.
Foster Still Defending, But With Added Pressure
Houston’s Foster (23-3, 12 KOs) keeps his WBC title on the line, but should he lose to the overweight Fulton, the belt becomes vacant rather than transferring hands. That dynamic gives the champion all the risk and Fulton none of the reward beyond the victory itself.
Stephen Foster has emerged as one of the division’s most technically sound fighters, and Saturday’s bout remains a meaningful litmus test regardless of the title implications.
Part of a Stacked PBC PPV Undercard
The bout will air on Premier Boxing Champions’ pay-per-view card beginning at 8 p.m. ET ($74.99). In the main event, Mexico’s Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOs) is set to defend his WBC interim super lightweight title against Lamont Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs).
Fulton vs. Foster was expected to be one of the card’s most intriguing championship clashes and while it still offers high-level talent and compelling style matchups, the stakes have shifted dramatically.
