Khabib Nurmagomedov Offers Wisdom To Bitter Rival

Retired MMA legend Khabib Nurmagomedov has extended an unexpected message of reflection and hope toward former rival Conor McGregor, urging the embattled Irishman to turn his life around and use his influence for good.

Nurmagomedov, 36, famously defeated McGregor at UFC 229 in 2018 in one of the most explosive grudge matches in the sport’s history. After submitting McGregor via rear-naked choke, the Russian fighter leapt over the cage to engage in a post-fight melee with McGregor’s team a chaotic moment that cemented the fight’s notoriety. Nurmagomedov would go on to retire in 2020 with an unblemished 29–0 record.

McGregor, now 37, has had a far more turbulent path since their clash. He went 1–2 in the Octagon following the loss, suffered a broken leg in a 2021 bout with Dustin Poirier, and has faced a string of legal troubles, including a civil sexual assault case in 2024. His professional fighting future has been uncertain, although he recently reentered the UFC’s mandatory drug-testing pool a prerequisite for any return.

Speaking at a public event in New York over the weekend, Nurmagomedov acknowledged McGregor’s troubles but emphasized that redemption is still possible.

Khabib Offers Wisdom

“This is punishment,” Nurmagomedov said, “but the most beautiful part of this is Allah always gives the chance to come back. I think he has a chance. He has to change how he is living.”

In a striking contrast to the bitter rhetoric that followed their 2018 bout, Khabib now appears to see an opportunity for his former rival to make a broader impact if he chooses to change.

“Why am I talking about this?” he continued. “If he’s going to change, he can change with him so many other lives too. That’s why I wish him to change himself. If he’s not going to change, it will be punishment all his life.”

The shift in tone is a dramatic departure from his past remarks. In a 2019 interview with ESPN, Nurmagomedov declared that their feud would “never be finished” and insisted that if they crossed paths, “we’re going to fight, 100%.”

Now, five years later, the former UFC lightweight champion appears to be speaking less as a rival and more as a man offering a second chance.
