Longtime Raiders veteran holds out of voluntary workouts

It did not take long at all for the Pete Carroll era of the Las Vegas Raiders to hit its first hurdle.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Raiders left tackle Kolton Miller has not participated in the team’s voluntary workout program as of Wednesday. He is doing so in the hopes of getting a contract extension from the team.

Miller is currently in the last year of his deal with no guaranteed money remaining. While he will not be punished for missing out on the voluntary portion of the workout program, Miller will be subject to fines starting from if his holdout continues into the mandatory minicamp on June 10-12.

Miller has emerged as one of the league’s best left tackles since being drafted by the Raiders in 2018, so it does make sense that he would want to be paid as such.

However, there is a chance that Miller’s gambit backfires on him. The Raiders currently hold the sixth overall pick in the draft, and it is likely one of the top offensive tackles in LSU’s Will Campbell and Missouri’s Armand Membou will be available. If the Raiders and Miller are far apart on the numbers of an extension, they could just as easily decide to draft one of those prospects and move off of Miller for an extra pick or two.

That does lead to a fair amount of risk, and Miller has yet to request a trade. Expect this to be a storyline as the draft comes closer, as a decision on the Raiders’ blindside protector appears to be coming to a head earlier than anticipated.
