The Vegas Golden Knights launched a new sustainability-focused initiative as they continue their green efforts on and off the ice.

They’re dubbing it The Knight SHIELD Project, and it’s adding a little green to the Knights’ impressive resume.

The initiative will help fortify the organization’s commitment to sustainability at City National Arena, The Dollar Loan Center, and America First Center — where the Vegas Golden Knights and Henderson Silver Knights practice and play.

“Since the inception of the Vegas Golden Knights, our organization has strived to be Champions both on the ice and in the community,” said Vegas Golden Knights Chief Marketing Officer Eric Tosi.

SHIELD is an acronym that highlights what the initiative is all about:

Sustainability. Healthy air. Improve and inspire. Energy and water efficiency. Landscape protection. Decrease waste generation.

“The Knight SHIELD Project aligns with our core ethos of protecting and defending our realm,” Tosi continued. “The infrastructure and processes we have established will allow us to continually introduce new elements and initiatives to the program as we advance on our journey.”

Tosi hopes the program will position the team to ‘make an even greater positive impact’ in the community.

Vegas Golden Knights Strengthening Their Community Ties

As part of the new initiative, the Vegas Golden Knights and Henderson Silver Knights are joining hands with two industry advisors that will help shape the future of The Knight SHIELD Project:

  1. The Green Sports Alliance (GSA) — a global initiative to engage, inspire, and celebrate the sport industry’s progress toward net-zero carbon.
  2. Green Operations and Advanced Leadership (GOAL) — will act as an advisor on strategy, data analysis and impact.

But that’s not all.

The Golden Knights (and Silver Knights) are also working with two community beneficiaries, which will stand to benefit from the organization’s efforts:

  1. Green Our Planet — a non-profit that uses school garden and hydroponic STEM programs that teach students about sustainability and financial literacy.
  2. One Tree Planted — a 501(c)3 environmental non-profit tree planting charity that plant trees in countries around the world.

Additional beneficiaries will be announced in the coming months.

But hold on — there’s more.

VGK Wear Green Jerseys During Warmups

As some of you know, the Golden Knights wore green warmup jerseys on Sunday in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

Those jerseys, which were signed by the players, are now being auctioned off online. And a portion of the proceeds from that auction are going directly to Green Our Planet.

The VGK Foundation has donated over $70,000 to Green Our Planet since 2017.

VGK also pledged to donate $100 to One Tree Planted for every save the team made during Sunday’s game. Logan Thompson stopped 20 of 21 shots, which amounted to a $2,000 donation.

The Golden Knights defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-1, and have now won three of their past four games, but it was also a win off the ice — and a win for the Las Vegas community, as a whole.

This is what sports is all about — and it’s just the beginning of what the future has in store.
