UNLV volleyball split its Mountain West home-and-home series with Grand Canyon, sweeping the Lopes in Las Vegas before falling in five sets Saturday in Phoenix. Jaida Harris led the Rebels with 20 kills in the road match.

UNLV showed Thursday what its best volleyball can look like. Two days later, Grand Canyon showed how quickly the margins can turn.

The Rebels split their Mountain West home-and-home with the Lopes, sweeping GCU 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 at The Pavilion before falling 25-21, 22-25, 15-25, 25-23, 8-15 on Saturday in Phoenix. UNLV exits the weekend 6-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

The two matches told very different stories. At home, the Rebels were cleaner, steadier from the service line and more efficient through the middle. On the road, they still created enough pressure to force a fifth set, but Grand Canyon found more offense and eventually pulled away.

Thursday belonged to balance

UNLV did not need a huge kill total to control the first meeting. The Rebels finished with 38 kills, fewer than Grand Canyon’s 42, but committed only 13 attack errors while the Lopes had 22. That difference helped UNLV hit .260 to GCU’s .194.

The Rebels also created pressure from the service line, finishing with seven aces to Grand Canyon’s two, and held an 8-4 edge in team blocks. Jaida Harris led UNLV with 10 kills, while the middle attack gave the Rebels their cleanest production.

Jada Ingram finished with six kills on eight swings and hit .625, while Rheanna Deen-Jackson added six kills at .333. Both also finished with four blocks, giving UNLV steady production in the middle without forcing the offense to lean too heavily on the pins.

Caleigh King supplied the milestone moment with four service aces, reaching 100 for her career and becoming the sixth Rebel in program history to hit that mark. She also helped finish the match, delivering an ace with the third set tied 23-23 before Harris put away back-to-back kills to complete the sweep.

Grand Canyon flips the script

Saturday started well for UNLV, which hit .379 in the first set and won 25-21. Grand Canyon gradually found more offense from there, finishing with 69 kills to UNLV’s 52 and hitting .211 to the Rebels’ .162.

The biggest difference was Starr Williams, who gave GCU a reliable answer all afternoon. Williams finished with 30 kills on 62 swings and hit .387, repeatedly giving the Lopes a clean way out of difficult rotations.

Harris carried much of UNLV’s response with 20 kills, 12 digs and six blocks. The Rebels also continued to create pressure at the net, where Ingram finished with 10 block assists and Deen-Jackson added six total blocks.

UNLV won the blocking battle 17-11, but Grand Canyon made up for it with more offensive volume and a 78-65 edge in digs. That was enough to keep the Lopes from being dragged into the same kind of error-heavy match they played Thursday.

One more push, not enough

UNLV still gave itself a chance after falling behind 2-1 in the match. The Rebels won the fourth 25-23 behind 15 kills, extending the afternoon to a deciding fifth.

Grand Canyon was sharper once it got there. The Lopes hit .258 in the final set while UNLV managed .069, and the 15-8 finish secured the split.

That contrast summed up the weekend. Thursday, UNLV controlled the match with cleaner attacking, middle efficiency and service pressure. Saturday, those strengths were still present, but Grand Canyon generated enough offense to stretch the match and then take control late.

Up next

UNLV returns to The Pavilion for the Silver State Series against UNR. The Rebels host the Wolf Pack on Thursday at 6 p.m. PT, then again Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
