LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Raiders are approaching a critical point in their season, and Sunday’s Week 7 matchup against the Buffalo Bills could determine whether the Silver and Black can begin turning things around.
Coming off consecutive losses, including a disappointing 45-17 defeat against the New England Patriots, the Raiders are looking to avoid a three-game losing streak against one of the AFC’s most dangerous teams.
Unfortunately for Las Vegas, the Bills enter the matchup with a 4-1 record and one of the NFL’s most dynamic quarterbacks in Josh Allen. Buffalo’s ability to attack defenses through the air and on the ground presents a significant challenge for a Raiders team still searching for consistency.
However, with the Bills coming off a short week, Las Vegas could have an opportunity to capitalize on the circumstances and deliver a much-needed upset at Allegiant Stadium. For that to happen, several Raiders players must elevate their performances, beginning with running back Ashton Jeanty.
Ashton Jeanty Must Find His Rhythm
Entering the season, Jeanty was expected to provide an immediate spark to the Raiders’ offense. The former Boise State standout arrived in Las Vegas with tremendous expectations following a remarkable collegiate career.
However, injuries have prevented the young running back from establishing the consistency that made him one of the most exciting prospects in football. Jeanty suffered an injury during training camp that reportedly lingered into the regular season, and his production has reflected those physical challenges.
Over the Raiders’ last two games, Jeanty has managed just 85 rushing yards on 25 carries. Even more concerning, he has yet to score a rushing touchdown this season and has recorded three games averaging fewer than three yards per carry.
Those numbers are far below what Las Vegas envisioned from its featured running back. While Jeanty’s talent remains unquestioned, the Raiders desperately need him to become a more significant factor in their offensive game plan.
Raiders Must Establish the Running Game
Against Buffalo, establishing a productive rushing attack will be essential. The Raiders cannot afford to become one-dimensional against a Bills defense capable of creating turnovers and disrupting opposing quarterbacks.
A successful ground game would help Las Vegas control possession, sustain drives and keep Allen on the sideline. That responsibility begins with Jeanty and an offensive line that must create better opportunities between the tackles.
However, Jeanty’s health remains an important consideration. If the rookie is still dealing with lingering injuries, the Raiders must determine whether continuing to increase his workload is the best decision for his long-term development.
Resting Jeanty could provide an opportunity for him to recover, but if he is healthy enough to play, Las Vegas will need meaningful production.
Can Las Vegas Pull Off the Upset?
The Raiders face a difficult assignment against a Buffalo team with legitimate postseason aspirations. Allen’s combination of arm strength, mobility and playmaking ability means Las Vegas cannot afford defensive breakdowns or costly turnovers.
Offensively, the Raiders must find ways to sustain drives rather than repeatedly placing their defense in unfavorable situations. Sunday’s matchup represents more than another regular-season game.
For a franchise attempting to establish a new identity, competing against an established AFC contender would provide a valuable indication of its progress. But moral victories will not be enough.
The Raiders need results, and Jeanty’s ability to rediscover his explosiveness could be one of the deciding factors. If Las Vegas cannot establish its running game and limit Buffalo’s offensive opportunities, the Silver and Black could be staring at their third consecutive defeat.
