AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — What appeared to be a promising opportunity for UNLV to secure another Mountain West Conference victory quickly turned into a disappointing afternoon as Air Force dominated the fourth quarter to defeat the Rebels 41-31 on Saturday.

Air Force quarterback Evan Medders delivered a remarkable performance, rushing for 152 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Falcons to 21 unanswered points in the final quarter.

The victory improved Air Force to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in Mountain West play, while UNLV dropped to 4-3 and suffered its first conference loss, falling to 2-1. For Rebels head coach Dan Mullen, the defeat exposed the challenges his team continues to face when attempting to close out competitive games.

Fourth-Quarter Collapse Dooms Rebels

UNLV appeared to have momentum late in the third quarter when quarterback Jackson Arnold connected with Kayden McGee on an eight-yard touchdown pass. The score gave the Rebels a 24-20 advantage with 1:41 remaining in the third quarter.

However, that would be UNLV’s final lead of the afternoon. Air Force responded with a decisive offensive surge that completely shifted the momentum. Just six seconds into the fourth quarter, Medders broke free for a 32-yard touchdown run, completing a four-play, 75-yard drive that put the Falcons ahead 27-24.

The Air Force quarterback wasn’t finished. Approximately four-and-a-half minutes later, Medders powered into the end zone from one yard out, extending the Falcons’ advantage to 34-24.

With UNLV struggling to contain Air Force’s rushing attack, Owen Allen added a two-yard touchdown run with 3:53 remaining, pushing the lead to 41-24. The Falcons’ three-touchdown fourth-quarter explosion proved too much for the Rebels to overcome.

Air Force Dominates on the Ground

The Falcons entered the matchup determined to establish their physical rushing attack, and UNLV struggled to find answers. Medders led the charge with 152 rushing yards and three touchdowns, repeatedly extending drives and creating problems for the Rebels’ defense.

Rocco Conti added 103 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Allen contributed another 96 yards and a score. Together, the trio accounted for 351 rushing yards, highlighting Air Force’s ability to control the game through its ground attack.

Equally impressive was the Falcons’ ball security. Air Force has not recorded a fumble this season through 431 offensive plays. Dating back to the second quarter of its 2025 matchup against New Mexico, the program has gone 549 consecutive plays without a fumble.

That discipline helped Air Force avoid costly mistakes while capitalizing on its offensive opportunities. Despite the loss, Arnold delivered productive moments for the Rebels’ offense. The UNLV quarterback finished with 246 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

His third-quarter touchdown connection with McGee briefly placed the Rebels in position to secure a significant conference victory. However, UNLV couldn’t maintain that momentum. The Rebels’ inability to slow Air Force’s rushing attack ultimately overshadowed their offensive production.

What’s Next for UNLV?

UNLV will have an opportunity to regroup during its upcoming bye week before returning to action October 31 against Northern Illinois. For Mullen and his coaching staff, improving defensive execution and finishing games will be priorities as the Rebels attempt to remain competitive in the Mountain West race.

Meanwhile, Air Force will travel to face Wyoming on Friday, looking to build on another impressive conference victory. For UNLV, Saturday’s loss serves as a reminder that holding a fourth-quarter lead means little without the ability to finish.

The Rebels had Air Force on the ropes entering the final quarter. But when the game mattered most, it was the Falcons who delivered the knockout punch.
