Danny Garcia Farewell To Barclays Center?

Danny Garcia is heading back to one of his favorite boxing stages and possibly for the final time. The former two-division world champion announced Wednesday that he will fight Daniel Gonzalez in a 10-round junior middleweight bout on October 18 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

A Farewell Feel

Garcia, 37, didn’t explicitly say this will be his last professional fight, but he acknowledged that his career is winding down. The Philadelphia native has fought some of his biggest nights at Barclays Center, compiling a 7-2 record there since debuting in the arena in 2012.

“The fans have supported me the whole way, since I first fought here, and have made Brooklyn feel like my home outside of Philly,” Garcia said in a statement. “The best way to say goodbye is by fighting here one last time and giving them a tremendous night of boxing full of rising young talent. It’s gonna be the DSG show in Brooklyn once again on October 18!”

Recent Struggles

Garcia (37-4, 21 KOs) enters the fight on a rough patch. He is 1-2 in his past three bouts and has fought only sparingly over the last five years. His most recent outing came last year against Erislandy Lara, who stopped Garcia in the ninth round to retain the WBA middleweight title. That defeat marked Garcia’s first career knockout loss, as Lara dropped him in the ninth before the referee halted the fight.

Despite those struggles, Garcia is still considered a heavy favorite over Gonzalez (22-4-1, 7 KOs), a Queens native who has never competed at Garcia’s championship level.

Brooklyn Legacy

Barclays Center has served as the backdrop for many of Garcia’s most meaningful nights. He knocked out Mexican legend Erik Morales in their 2012 rematch the first major boxing card at the venue. He also scored wins there over Zab Judah, Lamont Peterson, Paulie Malignaggi, and Robert Guerrero. His two losses in Brooklyn came against top-tier opposition in Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, both in welterweight title fights.

The October 18 card is being promoted by Garcia’s own promotional company, with tickets set to go on sale Thursday at 11 a.m. ET through Ticketmaster.com. Garcia said fans can expect not only his return but also a showcase of up-and-coming talent.

While Garcia hasn’t officially hung up the gloves, his upcoming bout against Daniel Gonzalez feels like a farewell showcase at the arena most closely tied to his career. Win or lose, October 18 promises to be a celebration of a fighter who made Brooklyn his second home.
