The A’s (42-62) open a four-game series against the Astros (60-42) Thursday at Daikin Park, with first pitch at 5:10 p.m. PST. Houston leads the season series 4-2.

The Athletics have lost four straight and are 1-5 since the All-Star break, most recently falling 2-1 to the Rangers to complete a sweep.

The Astros return home after sweeping Arizona and have won four in a row, extending their lead atop the AL West to six games.

Pitching Matchup

Luis Severino (3-11, 5.10 ERA) makes his 22nd start after snapping a five-game losing streak with a win over Cleveland, allowing two runs in five innings.

He’s 2-5 with a 4.82 ERA in his career against Houston and has pitched better on the road this season, posting a 3.10 ERA over nine starts.

Jason Alexander (1-0, 8.40 ERA) gets his second start and seventh appearance.

He earned a save with three scoreless innings against the Dodgers in his last outing and is making just his second appearance for Houston after being claimed from the Athletics, where he appeared in four games earlier this year.

The Astros, who are 33-19 at home, are tied for the second-most wins in MLB with 60. The A’s have struggled against winning teams, going 25-47, and are 2-4 versus Houston this year.

The A’s are also just 6-15 in Severino’s starts. Don’t expect an upset in the series opener.

Take the Astros on the money line.
