- What: NHL Western Conference Playoffs First Round Series
- When: April 20-May 3rd, 2025*(If Necessary)
- Who: Minnesota Wild vs. Vegas Golden Knights
- Where: T-Mobile Arena (Las Vegas, NV)
This time, we’ll take a closer look at the opening-round matchup between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Minnesota Wild.
Vegas has secured the Pacific Division title for the fourth time in its history and is ready to face a Wild team battling injuries in the latter part of the season.
Last year, the Golden Knights endured a tough first-round exit against the Dallas Stars. However, after their victory in the 2022-23 season, they are poised to reclaim the Stanley Cup.
Meanwhile, the Wild are returning to the playoffs after missing out last year.
They are beginning to welcome back key players like Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek, who were sidelined for significant portions of the second half of the season.
Series winner: Golden Knights (-275)
The Wild features offensive talent like Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, and Joel Eriksson Ek, but they ranked 26th in the league with just 2.74 goals per game. Even with a healthy roster, they may struggle in this series.
In contrast, the Golden Knights had a smoother path to the playoffs this year. With Jack Eichel enjoying a career season, they boast a deep forward lineup despite losing Jonathan Marchessault.
Averaging 3.34 goals per game, good for fifth in the league, they could create significant challenges for Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson.
The Golden Knights look ready for a deep playoff run and should advance easily in the first round.
Series spread bet: Golden Knights -1.5 (-115).
It’s difficult to accurately assess the Wild, as injuries affected their lineup for most of the season.
They started strong when healthy but have since struggled. With Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek back, they have a chance but lack the talent and depth to compete effectively.
In contrast, the Golden Knights appear to be strong Stanley Cup contenders. Jack Eichel is enjoying a remarkable season with 93 points, and their solid defense adds to their strength.
Although their penalty kill may falter, their power play ranks second in the league. While Filip Gustavsson could pull off an upset against Adin Hill, Vegas’s overall depth and skill make them the favorite.
Game/Series double: Golden Knights win Game 1/Golden Knights win Series (-130)
Both teams are adept at playing strong, defensive hockey but also feature skilled offensive players capable of finding the back of the net.
In their last two meetings, the Wild scored only once in each game, yet the Golden Knights know this series will be a tough challenge.
If Minnesota can shake off the effects of recent injuries, they could pose some problems for Vegas. With both teams boasting solid defensive units, they can effectively counter each other’s top-scoring lines.
Nonetheless, thanks to their depth, the Golden Knights will likely secure a spot in the second round.
Vegas has a robust core at center, and the addition of Nicolas Roy enhances their already impressive pivot lineup, which can disrupt the Wild’s top playmakers.
These matchups may be closely contested and defensive, but the advantage leans towards the Pacific Division champions in the Golden Knights vs. Wild series.
This may be my favorite bet of the series because you’re essentially getting VGK to win the series at a much more favorable price.
