For the second time in recent memory, the Vegas Golden Knights thought they had scored right at the buzzer in the team’s 2-1 loss to the New York Rangers at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday.
Both times, the clock had already hit zero when the puck hit the net.
“This is the second time in this recent homestand we’ve lost a game by a goal where we scored at the same end with point one. We needed one second more, so you know there’s a little something in the water right now with our puck luck,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “It’s not going our way. Bounces, we’re not getting any or a lot of easy goals or freebies.”
Cassidy mentioned the term “puck luck” numerous times, and it makes sense. Alexander Holtz and Jack Eichel each hit a post or the crossbar in the game.
The two goals scored in the game by the Rangers also were not the result of a weak Golden Knights breakdown.
Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck took a slapshot in the chest, where the puck found his stick, allowing him to backhand it into an open net. The game-winner came when New York forward Adam Edstrom tipped in a point shot past Ilya Samsonov.
“We gave up two tonight. Usually, at home, that’ll be enough for us. Usually is,” Cassidy said. “Probably has been 95% this year. It wasn’t tonight.”
