The Vegas Golden Knights acquired defenseman Noah Hanifin in a three-team trade with the Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers.

And they might not be done just yet.

Elliotte Friedman first reported the trade, breaking the news live on NHL on TNT. The deal was confirmed several hours later by Friedman and TSN‘s Darren Dreger.

Here’s what the Flames are getting from Vegas:

  • conditional 2025 first-round pick
  • conditional 2025 third-round pick
  • 26-year-old defenseman Daniil Miromanov

Here’s what the Flyers are getting from Vegas:

  • 2024 fifth-round pick

And here’s what Vegas gets:

  • 29-year-old defenseman Noah Hanifin
  • Double salary retention (Flames and Flyers)

The double salary retention means the Golden Knights are only absorbing $1,237,500 of Hanifin’s $4.95 million salary.

The conditional 2025 first-round pick could become a 2026 first-round pick if the Golden Knights trade their 2025 first-round pick before the NHL trade deadline on March 8.

The conditional 2025 third-round pick could become a 2025 second-round pick if the Golden Knights win at least one playoff series this year.

That means that the Golden Knights can still trade their 2024 and 2025 first-round picks before the trade deadline if they want to make another splash.

And they have the salary cap to do it because of the double salary retention.

Then again, they could always keep the picks and add to their talent pool — which The Athletic ranked 23rd in the NHL in January.

In other words, Vegas has options.

As for Noah Hanifin, he joins forward Anthony Mantha as the newest members of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Mantha joined the team on Tuesday in a deal that sent a 2024 2nd-round pick and a 2026 4th-round pick to the Washington Capitals.

Both Hanifin and Mantha are unrestricted free agents this summer.

Say Hello to Noah Hanifin

Noah Hanifin was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and played in 79 games as a 19-year-old rookie that season. He spent the first three years of his career with the Carolina Hurricanes, but was traded to the Calgary Flames in 2018.

Like Mantha, Hanifin is in the midst of one of his best seasons as a pro.

He has a career-high 11 goals through 61 games and is averaging a career-high 23:46 in ice time. He also has 24 assists and is 13 points away from tying a career high.

He’s a left-shot defenseman who eats up minutes, contributes offensively, and can play well in all situations.

And he fits an immediate need with Vegas placing Alec Martinez on injured reserve.

A contract extension was reportedly in the works, but Elliotte Friedman later confirmed there was ‘no extension as an immediate part of this deal.’

Meanwhile, the Flames signed Daniil Miromanov to a two-year contract extension worth $1.25 million per year.

What’s Next for the Vegas Golden Knights

The Golden Knights are in the midst of one of their worst stretches in recent history.

They’ve lost eight of their past 10 games and are currently in fourth place in the Pacific Division with 73 points (33-22-7). For a team that started the year 11-0-1, the Golden Knights are just 22-22-6 since.

Their next game is on Thursday (March 7), and it’s an important one. They play the Vancouver Canucks (40-17-7), who are currently leading the Pacific Division with 87 points.

VGK is 14 points behind Vancouver, but only five points behind second place.

A win on Thursday could give them the momentum they need to get over this hump.

Face-off is at 7 p.m. inside The Fortress.
