Tonight’s showdown between WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn has all the ingredients of a dangerous and increasingly uncomfortable night for the champion.
Garcia has the speed. He has the explosive left hook. He has the championship. But there’s one thing I don’t believe he’ll have against Benn: the ability to intimidate the man standing across from him.
And that could ultimately decide this fight. Garcia is at his most dangerous when opponents respect his speed and power enough to give him the space he needs to operate. Once fighters become hesitant to enter his range, Garcia can dictate the terms of the fight, wait for mistakes and unleash the explosive punches that have made him one of boxing’s biggest stars.
Benn isn’t coming to give him that luxury. He’s coming directly at him.
Benn Will Make Garcia Uncomfortable
From the opening bell, expect Benn to apply intelligent but relentless pressure. He doesn’t need to recklessly chase Garcia around the ring. He needs to consistently take away Garcia’s space, attack the body and make the champion work harder than he wants to work.
That’s where this matchup becomes fascinating. Garcia will land. He may even hurt Benn. But what happens when Benn doesn’t back down? What happens when Garcia lands his left hook and Benn continues walking forward?
That’s when this fight could become psychologically uncomfortable for the champion. Benn isn’t going to be intimidated by Garcia’s reputation, hand speed or power. He will be willing to exchange with him, and that willingness should force Garcia into a much more physical fight than he wants.
Pressure Will Eventually Become the Difference
Benn’s aggression isn’t simply about throwing punches. It’s about forcing Garcia to constantly react. Every time Garcia moves, Benn needs to cut off the ring.
Every time Garcia resets, Benn needs to make him reset again. Every time Garcia looks for a moment to breathe, Benn needs to attack his body.
The objective should be simple: make Ryan Garcia fight for three minutes of every round. That approach carries risk because Garcia possesses the punching power to punish overly aggressive opponents.
But Benn has to accept that risk. He cannot beat Garcia by standing outside and admiring his speed. He has to make this ugly. He has to make it physical. Most importantly, he has to make Garcia tired.
Garcia Will Eventually Run Out of Gas
I expect Garcia to have success during the first half of the fight. His speed should create openings, and Benn will probably have to absorb some hard shots while attempting to establish his pressure.
But this prediction isn’t based on the first four rounds. It’s based on what happens in Rounds 7, 8, 9 and beyond. That’s where Benn’s aggression should begin paying dividends.
Garcia’s legs will become heavier. His combinations will become shorter. He’ll spend more time along the ropes. The punches that were coming back at Benn early won’t arrive with the same frequency.
That’s when Benn will recognize the change. Once he senses Garcia beginning to fade, I expect him to increase the pressure dramatically.
This isn’t a prediction that Benn lands one spectacular punch and ends the night. I expect a breakdown. Body shots, pressure, physical exchanges and constant movement.
Garcia being forced to defend when he wants to rest. Round after round, Benn will make withdrawals from Garcia’s gas tank until there’s nothing left. Eventually, Garcia will find himself trapped against the ropes with Benn throwing combinations and the champion no longer providing enough offense in return.
That’s when the referee will have a decision to make.

Garcia will have his moments. He may win several of the early rounds. He might even hurt Benn. But he isn’t going to intimidate him. When Garcia realizes the man standing across from him is willing to walk through the fire and keep applying pressure, this fight will become increasingly uncomfortable.
Benn will turn that discomfort into exhaustion. Exhaustion will turn into vulnerability. Eventually, relentless pressure will turn into a stoppage. Tonight, Conor Benn breaks Ryan Garcia down and finishes him by TKO in the 9th round.
