Seven years ago, Jorge Masvidal delivered one of the most unforgettable moments in mixed martial arts history. On July 6, 2019, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during UFC 329, Masvidal stunned the combat sports world. By knocking out the previously unbeaten Ben Askren in just five seconds the fastest finish in UFC history.

The flying knee instantly became one of the most replayed knockouts the sport has ever seen and helped launch Masvidal into superstardom.

The Flying Knee That Changed Everything

From the opening bell, Masvidal sprinted toward the center of the Octagon as Askren ducked forward for an anticipated takedown attempt.

Masvidal timed it perfectly. A devastating flying knee landed flush, immediately knocking Askren unconscious before a pair of follow-up punches forced the referee to stop the contest just five seconds into the fight.

The knockout shattered the previous UFC record for the fastest finish and instantly became one of the defining highlights in promotional history.

The End of Askren’s MMA Run

The loss marked a dramatic turning point in Askren’s career. The former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder entered the fight with an undefeated 19-0 record and had successfully won his UFC debut.

However, after suffering the brutal knockout against Masvidal, Askren fought just once more inside the Octagon, losing by submission to Demian Maia before retiring from MMA.

He later boxed Jake Paul in 2021, suffering a first-round knockout. In 2025, Askren faced an even greater battle when a serious medical emergency left him in a coma for more than six weeks. Fortunately, he has made a remarkable recovery and has even discussed the possibility of competing again.

Masvidal’s Rise to Superstar Status

The Askren knockout was the centerpiece of one of the greatest 12-month runs of Masvidal’s career. He had already knocked out Darren Till in London before flattening Askren with the record-setting knee.

Later that year, Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz to capture the inaugural BMF Championship, cementing himself as one of the UFC’s biggest stars. His charisma, highlight-reel finishes, and “Gamebred” persona made him one of the promotion’s biggest attractions.
