A’s deadline path gets tricky as ESPN sees buyer fits

The Athletics are not playing like obvious buyers right now. They are eight games under .500, coming off a sweep by the Miami Marlins and stuck in one of their roughest stretches of the season. However, the AL West has not fully pushed them out of the conversation, and ESPN’s latest trade deadline board still treated the A’s like a team that could add. Stuck in the middle The A’s enter the week at 41-49, bruised by a rough June and a slow start to July. On Sunday, they trailed the Marlins 8-0 before clawing back within one run in a 9-8 loss. That comeback showed fight, but it also finished off a series sweep at Sutter Health Park. Still, the division has kept the door cracked open. The Athletics are 5.5 games behind Seattle in the AL West and three games out of second place. That makes the next few weeks critical. The A’s can talk themselves into adding because the AL West remains reachable. But they also have to be honest about a roster that has not played clean enough to force an aggressive buyer label. ESPN still sees a buyer fit The most interesting part of ESPN’s July 6 trade deadline update was that the A’s were not framed as sellers. Instead, the A’s appeared as a best fit for 10 possible trade targets. That matters because the list framed them as a potential landing spot, not a team being picked apart. Most of those fits were starting pitchers. ESPN linked the A’s to Joe Ryan, Reid Detmers, Casey Mize, Jose Soriano, Sandy Alcantara, Foster Griffin, Michael Wacha, Robbie Ray and Freddy Peralta. The lone position-player fit in that group was Matt Chapman. That does not mean the A’s are ready to buy. It does not mean they are close to any deal, either. ESPN did not list proposed packages or name specific A’s players who would have to be moved. But the direction is still notable. The outside view has not fully shifted the A’s into seller territory. Pitching tells the story The list also points to the most obvious need. If the A’s are going to add, starting pitching makes sense. They have gotten strong flashes from J.T. Ginn and Gage Jump, but the rotation has also been stretched during this slide. Jeffrey Springs has struggled. Aaron Civale has been uneven. Jack Perkins has swing-and-miss ability, but his results have not always matched it. Meanwhile, the bullpen has carried heavy mileage during long innings and uneven starts. So it makes sense that ESPN’s list connected the A’s to arms more than bats. Ryan would be a major swing. Detmers and Soriano would come with club control. Alcantara, Wacha, Ray and Peralta would represent different versions of veteran rotation help. Still, the price matters. A reunion would make for an easy storyline, and third base is always worth discussing when an elite defender is involved. But that fit would be more complicated than nostalgic. Chapman has a significant contract commitment beyond this season. Any move would have to fit not only the current roster, but the long-term picture around the A’s younger core. That is why the pitching links feel more realistic as a discussion point. The A’s need arms if they plan to chase the division. They also need to protect the players who are already shaping the next version of the club. Who should be off limits? If the A’s do buy, the line should be clear. Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers just became All-Stars. Jump has shown high-end rotation traits. Joshua Kuroda-Grauer has already given the lineup a jolt after making a fast climb from Double-A to Triple-A to the majors. Zack Gelof, Jacob Wilson, Max Muncy, Lawrence Butler and Henry Bolte also fit the group the A’s should be building around, not subtracting from. That does not mean no prospect can move. Deadline deals require value. But there is a difference between adding from depth and cutting into the foundation. For that reason, the A’s should be careful buyers at most right now. Two weeks to decide The deadline question is not settled. The A’s have not played well enough lately to demand additions. However, the AL West has not run away from them, and ESPN’s board suggests they are still being viewed as a team that could look outward instead of selling off pieces. That leaves them in a narrow lane. They can still become cautious buyers, but they need to earn it quickly. They can still avoid selling, but only if the slide stops before the deadline math turns against them. There is also a bigger-picture piece to this. With the club’s move to Las Vegas set for 2028, the A’s should be careful about dealing away young players who could be part of that next chapter. At the same time, a weak AL West keeps the door from closing completely. The A’s are playing poorly and sit well under .500, but they are not buried in a division where nobody has fully separated. That is why the deadline is tricky. For now, the A’s are not clearly buyers or sellers. They are buyer-curious, seller-wary and running out of time to prove which path makes sense.
