More grit and experience topped the to-do list Thursday. So, Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon went out and got it, trading for center Nic Dowd from the Washington Capitals.
In return, the Golden Knights sent goaltender Jesper Vikman, a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft, and a second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Entry Draft to Washington.
Why Dowd Fits Vegas
Dowd brings a simple identity, and it travels. He takes tough defensive-zone starts, wins pucks, and then gets off. Meanwhile, he handles heavy penalty-kill minutes without blinking.
He has played 55 games for Washington this season and recorded 16 points (4 G, 12 A). He also averaged 15:33 per game, which matters for a fourth-line center who rarely gets sheltered.
Penalty Kill And Contact
Dowd’s shorthanded usage stands out. He averaged 2:40 of shorthanded ice time per game, the highest among Capitals forwards. In addition, that rate ranked 10th among NHL forwards this season.
He also plays through bodies. Dowd has delivered 113 hits in 2025-26, which ranked third on Washington. As a result, Vegas adds a forward who can change the feel of a shift even without a scoring chance.
Fourth Line With Teeth
Dowd is in the first year of a two-year deal with a $3 million AAV. Still, Vegas didn’t trade for flash. Instead, it targeted reliability and bite.
Dowd should mesh with Cole Smith and Colton Sissons, and the roles line up cleanly. If that trio wins shifts, then Vegas can shorten lulls and start games with more structure.
Washington Felt The Loss
Capitals coach Spencer Carbery made it clear the move hit home.
“Really difficult day for our organization, our team, players, staff. Nic Dowd being traded after seven years,” Carbery said. “He’s meant a lot to this team. He’s meant a lot to this community, him and his family. He’ll be missed. It’s one of the unfortunate parts of this business, saying goodbye to good people.”
