LOS ANGELES — The promotional tour for one of early 2026’s most intriguing boxing matchups officially began Thursday, as Ryan Garcia and Mario Barrios met face to face for the first time ahead of their WBC welterweight title fight.
The pair will headline The Ring: High Stakes on February 21 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, streaming live on DAZN pay-per-view. For Garcia, the bout represents a chance to finally capture his first recognized world title nearly a decade into his professional career by prying the WBC belt from Barrios.
Garcia Embraces the Spotlight and the WBC
Never one to shy away from theatrics, Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) made sure all eyes were on him. To open the event, three women dressed in green and gold stepped onto the stage, each holding one letter spelling “W-B-C,” underscoring the title opportunity in front of him.
“I got to thank the WBC. I can’t thank you enough,” Garcia said, “I love the WBC. Like you have no idea how much I love the WBC.
“I gotta go grab that title. I’m hungry, I’m excited, and I’m ready to put on a show. For me, it’s all a show. I want to put on the best show possible, and you guys are going to get a great fight.”
Garcia also took a pointed jab at his former trainer, Joe Goossen now in Barrios’ corner by pulling a shirt from his backpack that read “I’M A TRAITOR.” The moment drew laughs, cameras, and plenty of headlines.
Barrios Keeps His Cool
While Garcia worked the room, Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) sat calmly on the dais, seemingly unmoved by the circus around him.
“He’s definitely a character and has the personality of an influencer, but he’s still a dangerous fighter,” Barrios said afterward. “I’m getting ready for a Ryan that we know and think is going to be a 100 percent.
“Regardless of all the bull—- he has going on, he’s still one of the biggest names in the sport, and I want to bring the biggest fights to the fans. He’s saying he’s 100 percent ready, and that’s exactly what we want.”
Questions Surround Both Fighters
The matchup comes with plenty of intrigue and skepticism on both sides.
Barrios enters the defense after back-to-back draws: one against a then-46-year-old Manny Pacquiao in July and another against Abel Ramos in November 2024, a fight that featured multiple knockdowns. Those performances have fueled the belief among fans and analysts that Barrios may be boxing’s most vulnerable reigning champion.
Garcia’s road back to a title shot has been even more turbulent. After being dropped and losing a unanimous decision to Rolando Romero in his welterweight debut last May. Garcia was still surprisingly ranked by the WBC. Complicating matters further, his dramatic three-knockdown win over Devin Haney in April 2024 was later overturned to a no contest after Garcia tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine.
Tactical Focus: Neutralizing the Left Hook
Barrios made it clear that preparation not promotion is his priority.
“Distance and timing is going to be the key, and using my physical attributes and boxing skills,” Barrios said. “It’s an advantage having Joe Goossen, but we can just look at his last couple of performances and pick up his bad habits, what he does well and what he does poorly.”
While Garcia arrived and departed with a sizable entourage, Barrios quietly went about his business.
“I have been doing this for a long time, and I love it,” Barrios said, “I stay motivated and in the gym. I stay working. I’ve never been a talker. I just work.”
With hype already swirling and questions looming over both fighters’ recent form. Garcia vs. Barrios is shaping up as a volatile mix of spectacle and substance one that could either validate Garcia’s long-awaited title dreams or cement Barrios’ reputation as a champion who thrives amid chaos.
