Jorge Masvidal: “I Am Training for Something Big”

Former UFC title challenger Jorge Masvidal may not be done with the Octagon just yet. Masvidal revealed this week that he is actively training for a potential return to action and hopes that comeback comes at the UFC’s planned White House event, a once-in-a-generation card expected to celebrate former President Donald Trump’s birthday and the United States’ 250th anniversary.

While rumors have intensified about a possible matchup with Conor McGregor, Masvidal stopped short of confirming or denying that the Irish star could be his opponent. Speaking on MMA Junkie Radio, Masvidal acknowledged the speculation but made it clear that details surrounding his return are being kept tightly under wraps

“Some of it is like level-five only access, so I can’t really say too much,” Masvidal said. “But I am training for something big. … You never know, right? Give ’em what they want, not what they expect. I can say it’s some big news. I have some fight news coming soon, and it’s very big news.”

The buzz around a Masvidal-McGregor fight gained traction after Dana White publicly shut down the possibility of McGregor fighting Michael Chandler at the White House event, opening the door to alternative opponents.

Masvidal suggested that clarity could come soon possibly within 10 days a timeline that aligns with White’s recent comments that official matchmaking for the White House card would begin after UFC 324.

“I can’t deny or confirm any of that right now,” Masvidal said. “But maybe hopefully soon I can. … Like maybe 10 days, something like that, I should have more confirmation on it.”

Whether that confirmation includes McGregor or another high-profile opponent remains to be seen.

Fighting at the White House Is the Real Goal

For Masvidal, however, the opponent may be secondary to the location itself. The Miami native who has openly supported Donald Trump and claims to be the former president’s favorite fighter said simply competing on the White House lawn would be the ultimate career capstone.

“I’m willing to be a team player,” Masvidal said. “I wouldn’t care if I end up on the prelims. Really, just the honor of fighting at the White House card.”

Masvidal pointed to the unique venues he’s already fought in from Madison Square Garden to the Playboy Mansion but said this opportunity would stand alone.

“I don’t think this gets done again,” he added.

Representing More Than Himself

Masvidal also framed the moment as something bigger than just his own career, emphasizing what it would mean to represent his background on such a historic stage.

“I’m a Latin motherf*cker, from immigrant parents on both sides, putting my crafts and skills on display, at the highest level, on the White House lawn,” Masvidal said. “Who’s ever done that? Nobody.”

“That’s the only fight I come back for, honestly.”

Whether it’s against McGregor or another marquee name. Masvidal has made one thing clear: if he’s stepping back into the Octagon. It will be for history not just headlines.
