Just days after announcing his retirement from boxing, undisputed three-division champion Terence “Bud” Crawford is facing a new legal fight this time outside the ring. A New York–based luxury jeweler has filed a civil lawsuit seeking at least $1.5 million in damages, alleging Crawford failed to honor a promotional agreement tied to a six-figure designer watch.
The Alleged Deal: $35K Down, Promotion for the Rest
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Manhattan Civil Court by Mazza New York, claims Crawford visited the retailer in February 2024 and expressed interest in a $139,000 Patek Philippe Aquanaut.
According to the complaint:
-
Crawford offered to pay $35,000 upfront
-
The remaining balance would be offset through logo placement on his fight trunks
-
Mazza accepted, delivered the watch, and began coordinating branding with Crawford’s representatives
The jeweler alleges that Crawford’s team agreed to display the Mazza logo during his upcoming bouts exposure the company considered enormously valuable given Crawford’s standing as one of boxing’s biggest global stars.
Logo Mishaps: From Madrimov to Canelo
Trouble allegedly began during Crawford’s August 2024 title defense against Israil Madrimov.
Mazza says its logo appeared on Crawford’s trunks at the start of the bout but had “fallen off completely by the fourth round.” Crawford’s team allegedly acknowledged the mishap and promised to correct it for his next fight the mega-event against Canelo Álvarez in September.
But when fight night arrived, the jeweler says the logo was nowhere to be found.
The lawsuit states that:
-
Mazza provided digital and physical branding materials
-
Communication with Crawford’s representatives continued for months
-
Staff were flown to Las Vegas to finalize promotional details
-
The logo still did not appear during the Canelo fight
Mazza claims the missed exposure during a global blockbuster event with Canelo cost the company roughly $1.5 million in lost promotional value.
Claims and Compensation Sought
Mazza New York’s lawsuit accuses Crawford of:
-
Breach of contract
-
Conversion
-
Unjust enrichment
The company is seeking:
-
Reimbursement for the Patek Philippe watch now said to be worth over $155,000
-
Compensation for the estimated $1.5 million in lost promotional visibility
-
Additional unspecified damages
Attorneys for Mazza argue the agreement gave Crawford substantial material benefits including a drastically discounted luxury timepiece while the jeweler received nothing of the promised promotional return.
Crawford’s Camp Silent So Far
A representative for Crawford has not yet commented on the lawsuit. It remains unclear whether the undefeated champion plans to fight the allegations or negotiate a settlement.
The timing is notable: Crawford retired earlier this week with a perfect 42-0 record, saying he was “walking away on his own terms” after becoming the first man in history to earn undisputed titles in three weight classes in the four-belt era.
