Ryan Garcia, Mario Barrios Near Deal for WBC Welterweight Title Clash in Early 2026

Negotiations are in the red zone for Ryan Garcia vs. Mario “El Azteca” Barrios for the WBC welterweight title in the first quarter of 2026, sources tell The Ring. Contracts are being exchanged between Golden Boy (Garcia) and PBC (Barrios), with both sides signaling optimism.

The Stakes

  • Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs): A bona fide star still chasing his first world title. He was stopped by Gervonta Davis at 135 in 2023 under a rehydration clause, and is rebounding from a May upset decision loss to Rolly Romero at 147 (for the vacant WBA interim belt later elevated).

  • Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs): Reigning WBC champion, coming off a July draw vs. Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas—the 46-year-old legend’s first fight in nearly four years—after a prior draw vs. Abel Ramos (Nov. 2024). Barrios also owns a past stoppage loss to Davis.

Garcia’s name briefly surfaced as a possible Jake Paul replacement opponent for a Netflix exhibition this winter, but promoter Oscar De La Hoya shut that down, citing Golden Boy’s DAZN alignment. The Barrios title bout remains the priority path.

On Nov. 22 in Riyadh, Devin Haney moves up to challenge Brian Norman Jr. for a welterweight strap on The Ring IV. If Haney wins and Garcia beats Barrios—Garcia–Haney II as a unification would instantly become one of the sport’s biggest events.

Why This Fight Matters

  • Redemption & validation: Garcia seeks his first world title and a reset after the Romero defeat.

  • Champion credibility: Barrios aims to convert recent high-profile results into definitive momentum with a marquee defense.

  • Crossover gravity: Garcia’s mainstream pull plus Barrios’ belt equals commercial juice in a crowded 147 field.

Early Keys to Victory

  • Garcia: Mid-range speed traps, first-step counters, and disciplined distance so the left hook plays without trading too long.

  • Barrios: Body work, volume layers, and front-foot pressure to test Garcia’s form late and narrow the speed gap.
