Smith has one year and $31 million left on his contract, and the Raiders will absorb all of the remaining salary. Schefter also reported that the Seahawks have attempted to get a deal done for a new contract, but the team and Smith couldn’t come to terms to a new deal.
Raiders coach Pete Carroll is familiar with Smith during their time with Seattle, which revitalized Smith’s career. After Russell Wilson left the Seahawks, Smith became the starter. Smith started 32 games, threw for 7,906 yards with 50 touchdowns and 2o interceptions. Those performances earned Smith recognition, including two Pro Bowls and an Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year.
In 2024, Smith threw for 4,320 yards with 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, leading the Seahawks to a 10-7 record.
The Raiders used six quarterbacks since Derek Carr‘s departure, including three in 2024 – Aidan O’Connell, Desmond Ridder, and Gardner Minshew. Minshew is expected to be released in the new NFL calendar year. Smith would be the seventh.
Smith and the Raiders will now turn to negotiating a new deal for the quarterback.
