Raiders hire top executive from division rival

The Las Vegas Raiders are continuing to build around new head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Spytek.

The coaching staff has continued to be worked on, but hires have been made in the front office as well.

Earlier, the Raiders hired Matt Capurro from the Seattle Seahawks to help out with coaching operations. Capurro had worked with Carroll before in Seattle, so bringing him into the organization made sense.

On Tuesday, the Raiders made another move to improve the functioning of their front office.

According to Tom Pelissero, the Raiders have hired the Denver Broncos vice president of football operations and compliance Mark Thewes. He will take the position of senior vice president of football operations and strategy.

Thewes has been part of the Broncos organization since 2009, when Josh McDaniels was named head coach of the team. Thewes lasted far longer than McDaniels did, wearing many different hats with the Broncos over his 16 years with the franchise.

One of the people who worked with Thewes in Dever was Spytek, who worked with the Broncos from 2013-15. Spytek undoubtedly served as a bridge between Thewes and the Raiders, bringing him along to a division rival in the Raiders.

Similar to Capurro, Thewes’ impact on the decision-making process is unclear, but bringing him into the Raiders means that Spytek and the front office believes he will play a key role in the daily operations of the franchise.

Thewes’ addition to the Raiders ensures that Spytek will work with a familiar face this season.
