Dedan Thomas, Jr. named Mountain West men’s player of the week

UNLV sophomore guard Dedan Thomas, Jr. was named Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Runnin’ Rebels to back-to-back wins.

Thomas, Jr. has received honors and awards from the conference before, but this is his first Player of the Week honor. It is also a first for the Runnin’ Rebels this season.

Thomas, Jr. averaged 13.5 points per game and 5.5 assists per game. He shot better er than 90 percent from the free-throw line and grabbed 2.5 rebounds per game.

Against Utah State, Thomas, Jr. scored eight points, no turnovers, and grabbed four rebounds.

Although Thomas, Jr. was 4-for-14 from the floor, his two baskets to ensure a victory for the Runnin’ Rebels came at a crucial time.

Against the San Diego State Aztecs, Thomas, Jr. led the Runnin’ Rebels, scoring 19 points and collecting a game-high five assists.

He was perfect from the free-throw line, sinking all 10 of his free throws.

Thomas, Jr. scored all of the Runnin’ Rebel’s last 11 points of the game, the final at 2:07. It was the Runnin’ Rebel’s first win against San Diego State since 2020.

The Runnin’ Rebels are 11-7 and 5-2 in the Mountain West and have won seven of their last 10 games. UNLV is tied for third place in the MW.

The Runnin’ Rebels will host Wyoming on Tuesday at the Thomas & Mack Center at 8 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
