It was announced that this afternoon that Las Vegas Aces guard Kate Martin was selected by the WNBA’s newest expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
The Aces released a statement regarding the move: “The Aces organization first and foremost would like to thank Kate Martin for all of her hard work and dedication to the team this past year. We are proud of Kate and the impact she has made as a member of the Aces team. Although we are sad to see her leave, being selected by Golden State shows the value Kate possesses in this league, and we all wish her nothing but the best as she continues her career with the Valkyries. As with the anyone who has been a member of this historic franchise, once an Ace, always an Ace, and Kate will always be a member of the Las Vegas Aces family.”
Some fans were sad to see Martin go. X user @friezsnake said: ‘I’ll miss you Kate.”
@bucketsNharmony tweeted: “Was so looking forward to seeing her with the Aces in year 2. Go be great, Kate!”
Some fans had some shady theories as to why the move happened.
One user tweeted: “You chose Kia or Syd over Kate Marti. Let’s hope that you’ll be making some major moves, cos this roster will be #3 or #4 at best in the upcoming season. If the playoffs showed us anything, a few teams are now better than the Aces!!”-@annabellekis
Another user tweeted: “A’ja was jealous of Kate’s jersey selling better than hers and Martin NEVER saw playing time again sadly, despite the fact that she played so well previously. “
A lot of fans are surprised at the Aces move and are deeply hurt by it honestly.
While Martin was an Ace, she averaged 2.6 ppg, 1.6 rpg, in 34 games played.
It will be fascinating to see how Kate Martin does with the Valkyries and how the Aces move forward this upcoming season.
