Aces unable to weather the Storm

The Las Vegas Aces lost to the Seattle Storm 78-65 on Friday, bringing their Commissioner Cup record to 1-1. Las Vegas drops to 5-3 overall, while the Storm improves to 7-3.

Aces struggle to get going offensively

The Aces started off the game slow offensively trailing 15-7 late in the first quarter shooting just 27% from the field. They would close the first quarter strong on a 9-2 run cutting the deficit to just one 17-16.

In the second quarter, they continued to struggle, shooting 4-17 from the field and trailed 36-28 at halftime.Jackie Young finished the half 1-9 from the field, while A’ja Wilson shot only 2-7.

In the first half, Jewell Loyd led Seattle with 15 points and Ezi Magbegor had 12, while Kelsey Plum led the Aces with 14 points.

A’ja Wilson, who had only six points at halftime, heated up late in the third quarter, scoring 15 of her 21 points. The Aces were able to cut the deficit to three, 54-51, entering the fourth quarter.

The Aces would came within one early in the fourth quarter but would fall behind by as many as 13 as they went on to lose to the Storm 74-63. Seattle won the paint battle 30-20 and held Aces guard Jackie Young to just 1/12 shooting from the field.

The Storm had four players in double figures led by Jewell Loyd  with 25 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assist. Skylar Diggins-Smith added 21 points and Ezi Magbegor finished with 14 points.

Nneka Ogwumike scored 12 points and made history becoming the 15th player in WNBA history to score 6000 points. 

A’ja Wilson led the Aces with 29 points and 11 rebounds, making history once again. Wilson tied Diana Taurasi for the longest streak of games with at least 20 points, with 13.

The only other Aces player in double figures was Kelsey Plum, who had 18 points. Jackie Young struggled to get going offensively, scoring 3 points on 1-12 shooting from the field and 1-6 from three.

The Aces will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Sparks on Sunday with tip off set for 6 pm.
