There was some controversy at UFC 300 involving Arman Tsarukyan (22-3) and a fan. As a result, he was fined $31,600 for the altercation, which is 20% of his total payout. Although Tsarukyan defeated Charles Oliveira via decision, the Armenian fighter didn’t have the best night at UFC 300.
The fan flipped off Tsarukyan during his walk-out against Oliviera. This led him to retaliate against the fan, swinging his fists at him. After the altercation, the fan in question, Obed Ardon, apologized and refused to press charges.

But that brings up the question of fan altercations and whether the athlete is right to retaliate. Sometimes, fans can act out of line and cross boundaries. The “Malice at the Palace” is a perfect example, where a fan splashed beer on Ron Artest after a tense brawl between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers.
What Happened at UFC 300?
Often, sports fans can get extremely rowdy and cross a line or two. Whether it’s insulting an athlete about a personal issue or attacking them, their actions can create chaos. For Arman Tsarukyan, that was what he perceived as his situation.
However, Ardon simply flipped off the lightweight fighter. He didn’t attack him or insult his personal life. Instead, it was an obscene gesture that provoked the MMA fighter.
Normally, this is justified when fans try to rough up the athletes or get personal. However, the simple act of flipping someone off doesn’t warrant that. Tsarukyan could’ve let the incident go and gone on with the fight,
Can Athletes Like Arman Tsarukyan Retaliate?
Going back to the “Malice at the Palace,” the fan initiated the incident by throwing beer at Ron Artest. The former Pacer acted in kind, going after the fan. Such incidents should warrant the athletes to defend themselves from potential threats.
For Arman Tsarukyan, this wasn’t the situation. But that doesn’t mean he can’t defend himself from potential threats in the future. He is a human being and deserves to be treated as such.
