Previewing Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia: Who Wins?

@Joe Camporele-USA Today Sports

Ryan Garcia (24-1) hasn’t done a good job making new friends. Whether it’s other boxers or professional baseball teams, the Los Alamitos native is becoming the most hated boxer right now. That’s especially true with Devin Haney, who shoved him at the Empire State Building on Tuesday.

However, there’s one thing the controversial boxer knows how to do: Drum up attention. Suddenly, Twitter is alight in Garcia-Haney content, with reactions from the preceding events everywhere. Now, boxing has a new villain.

But can the superhero in Haney take down the supervillain? Or will Garcia get the last laugh and continue his reign of terror on the current boxing landscape?

The Case For Ryan Garcia

Ryan Garcia is a power boxer in the simplest form. He overwhelms his opponents with heavy strikes, putting his entire body into every punch. Whether it’s his uppercuts or jabs, the 25-year-old backs up his trash talk.

He takes the Conor McGregor approach to fighting: Mess with your opponents with harsh trash talk and pummel them into oblivion. The only difference is that “Notorious” does it better. Still, Garcia’s mental advantage can prove to be a deadly combo with his iron fists.

The Case For Devin Haney

Devin Haney is one of the most technical boxers in the game. He knows how to add purpose to every aspect of his boxing, whether it’s his movements or punches. Combine that with his lightning-fast punches and he becomes a lethal opponent.

Another quality of the San Francisco native’s game is he doesn’t waste energy in his movements. If the fight extends past four rounds, it’s more likely that Haney will win. He’s all about efficiency, ranging from his fighting to his defense.

The Verdict

For Ryan Garcia, talking a big game against your opponent could pay off in spades. Imagine how much attention his victory would draw if he ended the undefeated Haney (31-0). Suddenly, people would see Garcia in hopes of him potentially losing.

However, Devin Haney is the pick to win the fight. His overall technique and speed will be too much for Garcia to handle. Plus, the San Francisco native has enough motivation to shut the chatty Los Alamitos native up. Haney should get a heroic ending by Saturday’s end.
