The Oakland Athletics will be leaving Oakland much sooner than anticipated. The move to Vegas won’t happen until 2028, but the move out of Oakland will happen after this season is over ending a 56 year run in the bay. After failed negotiations to extend their lease, Athletics Owner John Fisher announced that the team will be moving to Sacramento. They’ll play in the Sacramento River Cats stadium, the home of the San Francisco Giants Triple A team.

“I just want to say we’re excited to be here for the next three years,” Fisher said. “Playing in this beautiful ballpark but also to be able to watch some of the greatest players in baseball, whether they be Athletics players or Aaron Judge and others launch home runs out of this very intimate, most intimate ballpark in major league baseball next three years.”
The Athletics leaving will mark the end of all Oakland teams, Golden State went over the bridge to San Francisco in 2019. In 2020, the Raiders left to Las Vegas. A’s fans have shown their displeasure for management by averaging 6,438 fans a night.
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said in a statement, “Oakland offered a deal that was fair to the A’s and was fiscally responsible for our city, “We wish the A’s the best and will continue our conversations with them on facilitating the sale of their share of the Coliseum site. The City of Oakland will now focus on advancing redevelopment efforts at the Coliseum.”
