The Tropicana, a landmark in Las Vegas for half a century, will be shut down on Tuesday. To make way for the Oakland A’s new home. The new stadium, which is slated to open in 2028. It will be built on nine acres of the 35-acre site owned by Bally’s on the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The demolition will start in October, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Las Vegas history.

The A’s recently revealed proposed renderings of their new ballpark, which has been compared to the Sydney Opera House. If approved, the stadium will be a 33,000-seat domed stadium with multiple half-domes surrounding the back half of the facility. It will offer a unique architectural design and state-of-the-art facilities for an enhanced spectator experience.
For the 2025-2027 season, the A’s will need a temporary home and have considered Salt Lake City and Sacramento as possible destinations. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has expressed a desire to have the team’s interim plans completed by early summer for scheduling purposes. However, he has only stated that the team’s temporary home will be “someplace in the West.” The A’s have been negotiating with Oakland, Sacramento, and Salt Lake City, and a three-year stint in Sacramento has gained traction recently.

The City of Oakland has now extended the A’s an offer for a five-year lease with a three-year opt-out period. The team will have to pay a $97 million extension fee if they choose to opt-out.
The A’s opened the season with a four-game series against the Cleveland Guardians, averaging 6,725 fans. This was the lowest attendance of the 15 teams that played home games. The Miami Marlins had the second-lowest attendance, with 19,079, but as you can see, there is still a big gap.
