SANTA ANA, Calif. — For more than a decade, St. John Bosco has established itself as one of the premier high school football programs in the country. But the 2026 season has presented challenges rarely experienced by the Bellflower powerhouse.
The Braves suffered a heartbreaking 36-35 loss to longtime Trinity League rival Mater Dei on Friday night, marking their third defeat of the season for the first time since 2012.
For a program accustomed to competing for league, sectional and national championships, the loss represents a significant departure from its usual dominance. Mater Dei, meanwhile, secured another major rivalry victory in a matchup featuring two of Southern California’s most recognizable football programs.
A Season Unlike Any Other for St. John Bosco
St. John Bosco entered Friday’s matchup with a 7-2 record, having already suffered losses to Bishop Gorman and Santa Margarita. The Braves opened the season with a 38-28 defeat against Bishop Gorman before recovering with six consecutive victories.
However, that momentum came to an abrupt halt on October 16 when Santa Margarita defeated Bosco 21-7 in Bellflower. The Eagles’ defense limited the Braves to just one touchdown and one first down in the second half, exposing offensive inconsistencies that had rarely been associated with the program.
Bosco responded the following week with an emphatic 54-7 victory over Servite, seemingly regaining its offensive rhythm before the showdown against Mater Dei. But Friday’s one-point defeat dropped the Braves to 7-3 and placed an unfamiliar spotlight on a program that has set the standard for high school football excellence.
Three regular-season losses may not be unusual for most programs competing in the Trinity League. For St. John Bosco, however, they represent a significant historical development.
Mater Dei Adds Another Chapter to Historic Rivalry
Few rivalries in high school football carry the national significance of St. John Bosco against Mater Dei. The two programs have regularly competed for Trinity League supremacy, CIF Southern Section championships and national recognition.
Their matchups routinely feature some of the nation’s most highly recruited prospects and future college football stars. Friday’s 36-35 result provided another dramatic chapter in that rivalry.
While the Braves scored 35 points, it wasn’t enough to overcome Mater Dei in a game decided by the narrowest of margins. The result also highlights how competitive the Trinity League has become.
Both programs entered the contest with identical 7-2 records, including losses to Bishop Gorman and Santa Margarita. With Mater Dei emerging victorious, the Monarchs improved to 8-2 while Bosco fell to 7-3.
Jason Negro Faces a Major Challenge
St. John Bosco head coach Jason Negro has built one of the most respected programs in high school football through elite recruiting, player development and championship expectations.
His teams have consistently competed against the nation’s toughest opponents, often emerging as legitimate contenders for state and national titles. But this season has tested the Braves in ways they haven’t experienced in years.
The losses to Bishop Gorman, Santa Margarita and Mater Dei demonstrate the demanding nature of Bosco’s schedule. They also raise questions about whether the Braves can regain the consistency needed to make another deep postseason run.
Despite the setbacks, Bosco still possesses significant offensive talent, including quarterback Koa Malau’ulu and running back Maliq Allen. The challenge will be turning that talent into consistent execution against the elite defenses awaiting the Braves in postseason competition.
Can St. John Bosco Still Make a Championship Run?
The regular-season losses certainly complicate Bosco’s championship aspirations, but they don’t automatically eliminate the Braves from contention. The CIF Southern Section playoffs provide an opportunity for teams to reset, address their weaknesses and compete for a championship regardless of earlier setbacks.
For Bosco, that opportunity could become especially important. A program that has spent years setting the standard for Southern California high school football now finds itself attempting to overcome adversity rather than simply maintaining dominance.
The Braves must improve defensively, execute in critical moments and find ways to finish close games. Those adjustments could determine whether this season becomes a temporary setback or signals a changing balance of power within the Trinity League.
Mater Dei, meanwhile, has strengthened its position heading toward postseason play with another statement victory over its longtime rival.
