Mission Viejo, Calif. — Santa Margarita knocked off Southern California powerhouse Mater Dei 14-7 Friday night, improving to 6-0 and making its presence felt in the Trinity League. In a matchup where points were difficult to find. The Eagles did something few teams are capable of doing they kept Mater Dei’s offense under control for four quarters.
Holding the Monarchs to just seven points allowed. Santa Margarita to turn the game into a defensive battle and ultimately protect its home field with one of its biggest victories of the season.
The Monarchs have long represented the standard in Southern California high school football, routinely producing elite college prospects and competing on the national stage. But Santa Margarita is showing that they aren’t interested in releasing their grip on their Trinity League supremacy anytime soon.
Another Close Loss for Mater Dei
The defeat drops Mater Dei to 4-2 and continues an unusual stretch for one of California’s most recognizable programs. Mater Dei’s two losses have now come Bishop Gorman and Santa Margarita making the road through the remainder of league play increasingly important.
For a program accustomed to competing for championships and national recognition. Two losses this early in the season will generate questions. But Friday’s result also says plenty about Santa Margarita.
This wasn’t simply Mater Dei having an off night. The Eagles earned the victory by preventing the Monarchs from turning the game into the type of explosive offensive contest they have so often controlled. Santa Margarita arguably has the best defensive unit in the country. Folks in the Valley might have something to say about that with how lights out Sierra Canyon defense has been playing.
