After Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals, the New York Knicks won their first championship in 53 years in San Antonio. It’s a historic milestone in NBA history. With the league year complete, owners will meet in mid-July and may hold a final vote on Las Vegas expansion within weeks.

The NBA’s relationship with Las Vegas has strengthened over the years. Notably, the city is now a fixture for various NBA events. In addition to hosting the annual NBA Cup in-season tournament, Las Vegas is home to the NBA Summer League and serves as the training headquarters for the US men’s national team, which is primarily composed of NBA All-Stars.

Expansion has long been considered inevitable. In March, NBA owners unanimously approved Las Vegas and Seattle as preliminary sites. The 2026 Summer League will run from 9 to 19 July. Owners typically meet during the first week. While a vote has not been confirmed, it is under discussion and closely watched by NBA fans everywhere.

Expansion Details

Both cities bring significant value to expansion talks, but the stakes are especially high for Las Vegas as it aims to secure its fourth major professional sports league. In the context of major league expansion, the NBA would be groundbreaking for Las Vegas. Currently, twelve US metropolitan areas host all four major sports. Las Vegas would be the smallest if approved.

Sports expansion has been a key objective for the city, and recent declines in performance have made adding basketball more appealing.021 to 2024, Las Vegas saw record visitation across all metrics. Since early 2025, these trends have reversed. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reports a 7.5% year-over-year decline in visitation and a 6% drop in airport traffic in 2025. In this context, an NBA team is seen as a potential solution. In 2026, tourism remains flat and air traffic has fallen another 6% through April.

While gaming revenue has performed better than visitation and air traffic, profitability remains a concern. The latest Nevada Gaming Control Board report shows Strip casinos’ net profits fell over 80% year-over-year in FY25, totaling $154.2 million from $21 billion in revenue, a 4% annual decrease. Clearly, new entertainment like nba basketball could boost the local economy.

Sports have become a central component of Las Vegas’s long-term growth strategy. The addition of another NBA franchise could mark a new chapter. Stakeholders are increasingly prioritizing the sector to address recent economic challenges.
