JUPITER ISLAND, Fla. — Tiger Woods was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of driving under the influence following a rollover crash near his home, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say the incident occurred just before 2 p.m. ET along Beach Road on Jupiter Island. According to officials, Woods was driving a Range Rover at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass a work truck. During the maneuver, his vehicle clipped the trailer of the truck and flipped onto its side.
The crash happened roughly four miles from Woods’ residence. Despite the severity of the accident, Woods was not injured and was able to exit the vehicle on his own through the passenger side.
Investigation and Arrest
Responding officers quickly suspected impairment. “It did appear that the driver of the Land Rover might be impaired,” said Sheriff John Budensiek. Woods reportedly showed signs of impairment at the scene and was described as “lethargic” by investigators. He submitted to a breathalyzer test, which returned a 0.00 blood alcohol content, leading officers to suspect possible influence of medication or other substances.
Woods was then arrested and charged with:
- DUI with property damage
- Refusal to submit to a lawful test
He declined to provide a urine sample during the investigation. According to the sheriff’s office, the pickup truck involved in the incident had slowed down to turn into a driveway. The driver attempted to move out of the way after noticing Woods’ vehicle approaching at high speed but was unable to do so due to the narrow roadway. Woods’ SUV struck the trailer and overturned. No injuries were reported for either driver.
Release from Custody
Woods was transported to the Martin County Jail and held for the mandatory eight-hour detention period required under Florida law. He was released later that evening at approximately 11 p.m. ET.
Officials noted that Woods was cooperative but cautious during the investigation. “He was not trying to incriminate himself,” Budensiek said. “He was careful in what he said and didn’t say.”
Law Enforcement Statement
Authorities emphasized that Woods’ status did not impact how the situation was handled. “We know we arrested a high-profile figure,” Budensiek said. “But it doesn’t matter who you are. If you break the law, we’re going to follow the law.”
Tiger Woods avoided serious injury in what could have been a far more dangerous incident. However, the arrest adds another chapter to a career that has seen both historic success and off-course challenges. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash.
